i say sell it. If you can get that $40k or whatever. My kid is 14. I don't think her generation is gonna give a fuck about vintage guitars.
otoh:

the world's population is growing near-exponentially, so they wont have to give a fuck in the same proportions.

it's been generations since most ppl gave a fuck about violins, yet Strads still command what they command.

nevertheless, i'm not sure financial considerations alone are a compelling reason to keep a guitar. there are almost certainly many financial instruments that have a better rate of return, so if that's your only goal you'd be much better off liquidating the guitar and investing there.

i keep all my shit bc i really enjoy using it (and also, in my case, it brings non-investment earning potential, though arguably my guitars' value-above-replacement-interest isn't great enough to justify keeping them purely as a business asset)

I mean, it's sold now and that's probably the most rational thing you could have done, but it was also a sweet potential eyes-of-the-world situation where you could have made the most out of bringing a '56 Les Paul to rehearsals and tiny pub gigs recklessly because how many people are currently doing that in the world?

If any I'm guessing it's in the single digits, and I'd have gotten a kick out of potentially being the only one out there once/if I managed to shake the anxiety and guilt.

I took it to some rehearsals but, as much as I'd have loved to have done what you say, my anxiety would never allow. I'm just too damn clumsy to risk it.

It's okay, I've made my peace with it, I enjoyed the experience and have a cool story I can keep forever. Honestly, I get more pleasure out of playing my AO60s Tele, and that's more important than bragging rights.

Plus, money.
