That polyfill or wood filler under the bridge is odd. I wonder what sort of repair that was for? Perhaps the wood underneath the bridge rotted a bit from sweat or something? I’ve never seen anything like that before.

The body is a refin, but I disagree that it was stripped down to the bare wood and that there is no Fullerplast. I can see the yellowing on the bare side of the pocket and the original paint stick shadow here:

The other thing I noticed was that the nail holes on the neck have been filled too. You can see them here between the upper screw holes:

Image

On my ‘61 Tele there’s only one nail hole and here there’s two, so I wonder if that’s because it’s a left handed neck? I don’t know Fender’s manufacturing process but the neck would get a nail to hold it in place. I’m guessing someone added the nail on the right side (same place as mine) out of habit before realizing it was a supposed to be a left hand neck and moved it to the correct place.
Oh yeah, two holes! It does seem that left handed builds were treated as rarities, so would make sense.

As to the body, I’m wondering if that filling is covering more routing. I thought it was the paint coming up & didn’t want to disturb it in case I needed to return it. But now that I think about it, it was deep to be paint… he did have a synth pickup on it in the 80s, but didn’t think you’d need a different bridge etc
I have nothing to offer anybody, except my own confusion?

As a little update, the seller has agreed to give me some cash back to cover a refin. He apologised & said he hasn’t taken the guard off since 68, always just gave it to his tech. That’s made me feel a lot better about it in general.

I’m loving bonding with it, regardless. Will probably play it until the strings are worn & then make a call if I fancy doing the finish sooner or leave it for a while longer.

Amazing guitar and that sounds like a good/fair solution. It really seems like it is special in all regards. What a find.

Great guitar man! With all its quirky mods it's still a 67 tele and a lefty. Not something you will find again easily. It sounds and looks like a keeper. The seller giving you some cash towards the refin in the cherry on top. Enjoy it for many years to come! Also, could the body be ash? The grain in the neck pocket makes me think so.

Thanks. I still feel a little let down, as if I saw this guitar in a shop with the listed changes for the same price I’d think it was a bit toppy. Doesn’t matter though. This guitar has heart & soul, and the owner really did love it. The £500 or so is going to be forgotten in a few months & I’ll be left with a guitar that’s a joy to play & has an incredible story.

Cheers- I did wonder if it’s Ash. Going to do some finish testing this weekend- wonder if that will reveal more.

You have some damn cool guitars yourself, sir :)

I can’t lie, I’ve loved finding & playing all these guitars. I guess not exactly special as they’ve mostly been factory standard, but they’re definitely rare. The 76 Mustang was my favourite, but way too heavy & way too much lacquer on the neck.

We’re all waiting to see JVGs Fender XII copy though… :?

Thank you :) It'll be better once I get off my ass and get a few assembled/reassembled :D That said, your collection is different because you've gone after factory made guitars. So, even if the model or colors or finish options aren't incredibly rare or special, the fact that it's a factory-made vintage lefty makes it incredibly special in my opinion. As much as I love the idea of a vintage guitar in my collection, mostly I just said "fuck it, I'll make what I want, since hunting for the real thing would be more work than I personally want to do" :D .

Totally understandable (and healthy). We often bake in the experience of acquiring the guitar into the experience of owning it (for better or worse), but this seem to be special enough to try to ignore the former some. It’s got enough cool history already and should be the image for when you look up “player” in the dictionary.

Guitar has been taken apart & ready to be sent off for some mild surgery & a real coat of paint.

Sanded back the filler under the bridge & here’s where I got to. Needed a few mm of clearance for some bridge/pickup? Maybe something to do with EMGs?

Having EMGs wouldn’t require this, looks like someone routed something under the bridge then filled it with something. Maybe it had a different bridge? Perhaps even a vibrato? Either way something looks fishy here.

Oh yeah, just realised that looks like a block of wood that isn’t the original body.

I’m over being bothered by anything fishy on this guitar. That’s what prompted getting it ready for refin - rather than hang around with unknowns I may as well get it to a place I want it asap. More time enjoying it, less time fretting about whether an 82 year-old man conned me :D

...place to hide drugs?
(No but why not use the pickup route that's there already...?)

Anyway, it'd be super interesting to see it completely stripped.
i love delay SO much ...that i procrastinate all the time.

remove the rest of the paint between the bridge pickup rout and the filled-in section. It may have had a strat trem installed. If you see filled in screw holes, remove the paint on the back where the spring cavity would be.

I also think the neck has had an overspray but who cares. Get the body sorted and you'll have an amazing guitar.

Oh and have new cloth leads added to the pickups, fuck that shielded cable BS.
