No, I don't like The Beatles...

Point of note:

Rickenbacker forums/FB groups are a weird place. The mere suggestion of modifying a 'precious' Ric gets them clutching pearls like a 50's housewife.

Unless you're modifying to early specs (ie: Beatles specs)...then they're all for it. What a bunch of dorks.
Did you start off by teasing them with the Bakelite TV knobs? They would start off complimenting you on the classic look. “Like John’s from the early Hamburg days” or “They look amazing on my 1959 Fireglow Capri.”

Then you toss in the other mods and watch the tone
change from admiration to horror!

The truth of the matter is that Rickenbacker only sent the 360-12 and 4001 to them because John had made the little 325 an iconic model. But the main reason he chose that guitar was because of the short scale. He wanted an instrument that he could easily play his Chuck Berry rhythm guitar style on while singing.

If Fender had made a Mustang in 1960 he probably would’ve picked that because of Hank Marvin and the Fender Strat being so popular. He stayed away from those until they stopped touring because the longer scale made them difficult to play. George certainly wanted a Strat and preferred Gretsch and Telecasters. I think Paul also had a Telecaster for playing leads? And someone had a Les Paul Jr. Then John got the Casino and quickly ditched the Rickenbacker.

The Beatles fetish that Rick fans had is funny because they only played them out of convenience - except for Paul, he’s stuck with the 4001 - and they made some classic music on them, but when they bought guitars for the sound they wanted they bought Fender and Gibson, not Rickenbacker.

And there’s dozens of other bands who used Rickenbackers, especially in early ‘80s post punk period, if you can free yourself from the ‘60s.

The gray wire is shielded.

You can see the shield terminate at the pot casings
Ah, I see now. I had missed that. Thanks Brad.

Maybe I should have guessed from the size of the wires.

Back in those days, everyone knew that if you were talking about Destiny's Child, you were talking about Beyonce, LaTavia, LeToya, and Larry.

All that bare wood and plastic and total lack of shielding there are reminding me why I traded my Ric on. There aren't even braided wires from the pickups.

Not to badmouth your guitar, my environment was very noisy, and traded the guitar for a nice, quiet Gibson L-00.

I was going to mention this too. The gray wire is actually listed as “Rickenbacker 22ga gray shielding wire” if you want to buy some. The pickup cover design is supposed to provide shielding as well.

Yeah, they were definitely on-board with the TV/Cooker knobs but they lost their minds when I suggested tearing out the neck pickup completely, putting a HB1 in the bridge and just running a volume and tone control :D :D

They also refer to members of the B*atles by just their first names, like they're their friends. "Oh, that's just like the one John had!", "I'm excited to get jiving like Paul", etc etc. It's very lame.

I would never pay this much for a guitar but I'm really into this 360 on Reverb

That’s a beauty and in great condition for an almost 30 year old guitar.

I nearly lost my mind and bought that one when I was looking at them. Fortunately I prefer the black ones.

yeah I always prefer black guitars and will most likely buy a black 360 but that sure is pretty. Realistically I'd probably be too afraid to play it and get it dinged up. A Black one looks better with dings haha.

Well, band practice was tonight and the ol' Ric did good. No uncontrollable feedback despite being semi-hollow and me using my usual cranked BF Bassman. Definitely slightly less low end chonk to palm mutes and the lower power chords but nothing that couldn't be EQ'd back a little.

Band mates both approved too. Looks like it's going to stick around a little :) It's the first time I've gone out for guitar-related activities without a Fender of any kind in about 20 years :derp:

I'll order all the bits I've got planned for the mods now and get it gig-ready.

Update on this.

Embarrassingly, last night at band rehearsal I realised my fat gut fucks with the playing angle of the Rickenbacker :D because the guitar is so big, and totally slab-backed, where my beer gut is pushes the top of the body forward so it sits at a sloping angle away from me :fp:

I'm sure I can get used to it if I adjust my playing stance when it's in action but it took me ages to work out why certain muscles were feeling weird on an extended playing session!

It's also a little more prone to feedback through the new amp. Not massively so, and not uncontrollable.

… don’t blame the guitar mate, blame the 3 beer buzz early in the morning.
