So, J… is it a keeper??
Still getting used to it. I've still not had too much okay time with it (bad back, kitchen refit going on, no spare time, etc). So far I'm enjoying it though.

Monday night with the band will the the litmus test through my Bassman and at proper volumes.
Silly Rabbit, don't you know scooped mids are for kids?

I think you should take a rat along, too. Gotta go full Peter Buck at the right volume to test a rickenbacker properly.
I have nothing to offer anybody, except my own confusion?

You’ve probably got enough rats to leave one in any place you’re likely to go :D

I think I've only got 6 or 7, not that many really. They are dotted around all over the place. I know I accidentally left one in the back of an amp I sold last year :D

This is probably the best use of photoshop I’ve seen in 20 years. Bravo.

I managed a few more hours with this today. Very much enjoying the different experience.

The neck pickup is, well, fucking horrible IMHO. Sounds like a blanket has been thrown over the amp. I rarely use a neck pickup anyway but for the rare times I do at home I prefer a bit of actual clarity...I'd have thought it would, considering its position is pushed back by the 24 fret neck, be a bit sharper than your average neck pickup anyway - it's just such a stark contrast to the fantastic jangle that comes out of the bridge position. Hell, it's even worse than a Telecaster neck pickup, and those are basically pointless/ornamental :D

So, providing it passes the band rehearsal test I will be proceeding with a few modifications.

1) new guard with stripped-down electronics/controls
2) replace knob(or knobs depending how many pots I decide to use) with bakelite cooker style ones like they used in the late 50's
3) some kind of blanking thing to cap off the Rick-O-Sound jack
4) possibly just remove the neck pickup entirely and make something to blank off the rout neatly
5) try and find some replacement tuners that fit and have a slotted (Kluson style) post
6) the Jetglo finish with white binding reminds me of a pint of Guinness - my go-to beverage - so maybe a little Guinness harp sticker on the guard.

THere's got to be something up with the ckt if the neck pickup is that dark. A lot of demos on YT have nice sounding neck pickups.

You need to have the fifth 'blend' knob fully ccw for the neck pickup to sound at its brightest. With a nice bright clean boost or even a klon(e) you can get some good sounds out of it. But it's pretty useless with any kind of gain, so maybe not for you?

Yeah, I rarely use neck pickups anyway so it's not the greatest of issues.

I might try and acquire one of the Ric HB1 pickups for the bridge position.

How's the EQ on your amp set? My 330 is definitely bright on the bridge, chimey in the middle and kinda creamy on the neck pickup, but not unusable by any means. I kinda dig it, honestly.

It's set pretty damn bright, bass on 3, treble on about 7. All my other guitars (JM's, Jags, Tele, Guild, etc) have all sounded great with these settings. There's not enough treble in the world that'll kill off that mud - the frequencies just aren't there to boost! It's not the end of the world (as we know it), it's not gonna get used in anger at all.
