NGD - 1989 OBG Les Paul custom

Post by sal paradise » Fri Dec 03, 2021 5:22 am

Ok, well not quite ngd. It’s en route with the courier to be delivered today. I’m super excited! It’s an upgrade to playing 70s lawsuit lps. Neck is supposedly slimmer than Gibson 60s, which is perfect for me. Bill Lawrence pickups, too- keen to hear those through a Marshall 8)

It’s super light, didn’t expect that. The finish & general feel is superb but I couldn’t not be a little underwhelmed when this nearly £2k guitar weighs the same as my £200 bolt-on 70s copy.

Once you play it though, the neck is flat & fast. Plugging it in, the neck pickup is everything I ever wanted from an LP. Spot on. The bridge pickup is neither PAF butter nor screaming rock god. That’s a bit of a shame as I was hoping for that sound. I wanted this to be my number one for recording. Not a problem cos I’ve got other guitars for that. It’s got something unique and special about it though. Oh, and I finally understand how people used to say anyone can make a Les paul sound good- so easy to bend, sustain & pinch. ;D

Congratulations! I had a white 89 custom for many years, and I very much regret letting it go. It did weigh about as much as my car though!

They say its a good era, post norlin with the intention of restoring their reputation.

Enjoy it.

On the weight of these guitars, apparently they aren’t chambered even though it’s super light. Does anyone know of a site with info about woods/tenon etc on these Japanese LPs? Info is patchy when searching Les paul forums etc.
