This is going to look incredible, well done to you two! Deed_Poll, I had managed to forget about that deep, angled trem slope. That's easily one of my favorite design implement of the past few years, it is super elegant in both form and function :)

That pickguard design is the type of problem my brain loves to spend hours solving.

How about...having your two laminations laser-cut, with a thin upper layer in clear acrylic onto which the pattern would be surface-engraved, and the bottom slightly thicker and black? You could spray your blue lacquer, sand the whole thing down until paint only remains in the etched areas, then epoxy it to the bottom layer using the screw holes for alignment. The epoxy would make the sanded, de-glossed surface transparent again, and it wouldn't interact with the lacquer.

From there, you could either make an MDF template yourself using a trim router bit (I have done that a few times when copying pickguards) or have one laser-cut along with the two laminations. Maybe a tiny bit smaller, so the whole of the edge would get cleaned up when you route your chamfer.

OR...You could get it cut as different parts the same thickness and epoxy them together, so that the blue lines show all the way down at the front edge. You'd have to factor in the laser's kerf to get the parts to fit in perfectly together, then trim the whole thing with a slightly undersized MDF template. That's a bit far-fetched but it could be really elegant.

Am I taking this too far?

I love both of those ideas! My original idea for it was actually to have a channel cut into a piece of clear acrylic, and paint that. The problem with both of those ideas is that I don't know anyone (including myself) who either has access to, or knows how to program and run a laser cutter. I'd be happy to pay someone for their time to do it, but it's an area that's a total blind spot for me right now.

I have been meaning to check out, and likely join, my local makerspace for that exact reason, but just haven't had the time. I always hope to be able to do everything myself, but there are some things that I just don't have the ability in.

While I'm still figuring out what I want to do with the pickguard, some extra length drill bits have arrived for drilling the cavity wire holes, and so has my neck! I'm planning to do a rough assembly of the baritone so I can play it for a little bit before I finish it. I'm off tomorrow and will load some pictures!

Well...

Mocked up with all the parts I've got for it so far. The pickguard is just a template (and will be black with blue lines).

I am absolutely drooling over this idea. I cannot wait to see it. I hope you manage the black and tron-light-bike blue/logans run font/70s-sci-fi everything.

for real. this thing makes me feel funny things the way few guitars do anymore.

Needs a metallic blue top and natural sides and back.

Thanks man! I am too! The neck arrived Monday, and I'm really chomping at the bit to do a little work on it. Unfortunately, our garage is packed with crap until we get a storage unit (likely next Tuesday), so I can't really get to my drill press today. Plus, it's cold as balls out. I asked our OSG friend HNB to make me some decals for it, and he did. I don't remember what the font name is, but it's in that 70's line style font, like this:

That actually sounds cool, but definitely not for this project.

Picture time! Now with the actual Warmoth baritone conversion neck (roasted maple with a rosewood fretboard, in a left-hand reverse Warhead headstock):

And one for an overall color scheme (not including guard):

I was talking to Deed_Poll this morning, showing some pictures of the guitar, and I kinda wonder if a natural/light-colored guard would look good too (as is shown in the first of the new pictures). I do still want to do the blue lines, but the blue lines on a cream guard might almost look like the actual 1982 TRON costumes. Any thoughts?

I ordered a few pickguard blanks off Amazon. 2 shades of 3-ply mint, and a 3-ply cream. When I get them, I'll post some pictures and add a poll!

[Baritone Juniordbird]
I bought some pickguard blanks after seeing how much I liked the color of the pickguard template. I had a piece of black guard material already, so I rough cut one of each.

Black (my original idea):

Cream (though not as dark of a cream color as I would've liked):

Still don't have any final, definitive plans on this one yet, but I'm slowly piecing it together. I bought a custom 12-string plate from Faction (I think I posted this before), and a Cepheus 12-string TOM-style bridge (which has the ability to intonate all 12 strings separately). My plan is still to have 3 pickups (like a Nashville Tele) with one being a Sustainiac pickup. I'll post more progress as I make more or have ideas.

New poll!!!

I've been chatting with Copacetic Guitars about finally refinishing my Tele Custom. I disassembled it last year sometime to strip the finish and haven't had much time. It's time to get my #1 back!

Here's how it used to be:
Image

I want it done with a new Capri Orange, after I fell in love with this:

The only question is, matching head or not? For reference, I found this Capri Orange P-Bass with a matching head:

I've always wanted something in Capri myself. An underappreciated color for sure.
My vote is leave the headstock natural.

Maybe your Marauder?! ;)

Ok!! I really am 50-50 either way. Unfortunately, I can't even base it on anything, as that P-bass is the only guitar picture I could find with a matching head...

LOVE Capri Orange! Back when the fender custom shop was in its infancy, I wanted to order a 63 telecaster double bound in Capri Orange. At that time, they would not do outside of a certain group of standard colors. That made me sad, but the silver lining was that it pushed me into building my own partscasters, so I guess it all worked out.

In any event, I would definitely go with a matching headstock, as long as the main part of the logo that you put on it is gold as in the photo you provided, and not black. Too much black and orange starts to look like Halloween …

It's a Warmoth, and I could never put a Fender or even Squier decal on it. Warmoth sends decals with, but I don't want one of those either. It's the one guitar I've had that I never named. I would definitely do a gold decal if I did one, but I'm not sure what I'd put there. I think it needs something beyond just being blank color, but it's always been blank.

EDIT: I should also mention that I usually prefer the look of matching headstocks, and that I've never had one either...

I certainly didn’t mean that you should put a Fender or squier decal on. I would never want Fender to get credit for any partscaster that I put together! I always much prefer a headstock with a custom decal. For what it’s worth, I really dig the Rothko and frost decals. They do such a great job:
