Bass XII

Post by damonp » Fri Jul 24, 2015 12:59 pm

I love my 12 strings...
I love my Gretsch G5265 Jet...
So, I got it in my head to build this, a 12 string Bass VI (obv.)
I decided to really run with it and go full on awesome and throw in other elements I love in different guitars.
I love the breadwinner shape...
I love semi-hollowbodies...
I love the Ric 12 string headstock style...
I threw this sketch together:

First off, has anyone attempted this?
Im wary of intonation issues, I am toying with compensating both at the bridge:

and the nut:

Thoughts?

Its so crazy that it just might work. Please do it :-* :)

not too keen on the shape, but I like the idea.
This is my signature. There are many like it, but this one is mine.

Harvester has done something similar, a 12 strings baritone. It plays very well according to the owner..

there's a few different roads you can go down I guess.

do you want it to be just like a 12 string version of a BassVI ?

or have it B-b like the Gretsch?
that's probably the easiest and most usable.

or like a 4 string bass with 2 pairs of octave strings

The Gretsch is tuned to E... Like the Bass VI
so yes, like a 12 string guitar an octave down... and prolly no doubled strings.

if i wanted to do a custom job... i'd just buy the neck and bridge off one of the deans and then custom cut my body.

What scale length are you looking to do? Do you want a 12 String Baritone or a 12 string bass?

I know you're looking for a doubled 6 string (Fundamental/octave) thing, not like a regular 12 string bass.

Hamer built a few Baritone 12s (Subtone 12), and at least two 12 string basses with 6 fundamentals.

Are you thinking of doing it for the challenge of the build or the sound? Our bass player gets a close enough for live sound to the intro to Pearl Jam's Jeremy with a EH pog.
short answer
yes with an 'if'
long answer
no with a 'but'

Nothing quite like a Hamer 12 biamped through an AC30 and a Trace Elliot 15" and 4X10"H!

Old thread, I know. Was playing an acoustic bajo sexto at my local shop and wondered what became of this project

Didn't Burns make a few of these in the '60s? Couldn't the nut of those 4 course 12 string basses be cut to a six course 12 string bass?
