Agreed! That looks absolutely amazing! Color-wise and shape, it looks like it would belong on a 60s Gretsch

unboxing day!
the project is probably at least a month off from starting, but it's going to be a good one. Just need a few more small parts before I begin.

I've been laminating some archtop panels:
- Foreground - birdseye maple
Right side - clear maple
The rest - inlays and tessellated patterns

Re: What's on your workbench right now?
The frets on the parts Jag were getting really bad, due to playing the shit out of it for several years, plus whatever had been done to the 78 Musicmaster neck during its lifetime. I took a crack at leveling them a couple months ago and it helped, but it wasn't all the way there. So today I sat down and redid it, properly this time, and it's such a huge improvement.

Re: What's on your workbench right now?
It started as a HH Tele, so the bridge was wider, and there were screw holes to hide... I'm still not fully convinced my option was the best (very thin plastic from a folder). Maybe black racing stripes? Also, I wanted a one pickup guitar, and I had those parts lying around I wanted to use, but the knobs aren't wired: pickup goes straight through the jack. I photoshopped a blank control plate, but it felt naked (though if one day I stumble on a one-hole plate, just for the jack, I'd get that). Original pickguard was a light parchment one, but I found this thin bakelite one: I love it, but the outline don't match well around the horn, so I'll be looking for a new one. And there's a chrome armrest in the mail.

A control plate with only a jack is probably just an uncut blank and a short drilling process away... Though it'd be kinda funny to use eg. a strat kind of jack there, though that's much more of a project drilling and filing into the plate. Still leaves you with what to do with the original jack if that's a concern.Gordon wrote: ↑Sun Jul 17, 2022 9:07 pm

Re: What's on your workbench right now?
More neck progress. The left one got bound. This was my first bound neck and it turned out pretty good (Luthier Skills +1!). I added a 2 piece roasted maple one to the crew as well.
I'm going to try and make a jig that works with a belt sanding station, to aid with sanding the headstock transitions. This had been my least favorite step on my previous necks. I'm hoping this jig will be the right approach for me.
I also just finished fixing a a friend's broken acoustic headstock. It's a cheap Fender, but they got it from a good friend of theirs. It was a clean break, except for a few missing chunks on the side and a missing nut. I wasn't about to try and reveneer this, but I filled in the missing chunks with some spare Khaya and drop filled the missing finish. It got a much needed fret level and dress, a new bone nut, and a set of D'addario Flat Tops. For a cheap Fender acoustic (and a Dreadnaught to boot) it plays and sounds really nice.
