JM pickguard - reissue mint/black it is...pics in a couple weeks.

Post by painted wood » Tue Dec 02, 2008 9:42 am

What guard should I put on my vintage '62 black JM?
and should I have the GuitarMill relic it at all?

I'm thinking that the checking and a slight dulling would be cool, but on the flip, high gloss and natural wear over the years would probably be cooler if it ever happens...

What do you all think?  It will have an amber switch tip.

thanks!

I like Thom Yorke's JM and I also like T Moore's too.  ??? :-\

Will it have a black headstock? If so, I'd say mint.

Otherwise vintage tort all the way as long as you can actually pay for it, as mentioned earlier. ;D

It's not about the gear! It's about you, your hands, your imagination, your feelings.

:) lovely tort guards...

It will have a non-matching headstock.

Will the Angela reissue mint JM guard match vintage covers and knobs or look  :-X ?

I guess I am leaning toward tort...checking and light dulling of the finish too.

My avatar pic is of my sunburst JM, but it would look similar, that's why I was considering mint (Thom Yorke black Jazz).  Mint is a heck of a lot cheaper too, but tort does look  :?.

I have the hardest time making these kinds of decisions....color choices, combos, tort or mint..... :wtf: I want them all!

keep your opinions coming...they really do help.

Vintage refins is one of the only situations I can really get behind the idea of relicing, as long as it isn't overdone.

If you have an old neck, old plastics, old parts... and a shiny new body, especially if it's a light color like white or sonic blue or whatever, it can just look a little jarring.

A tasteful relic job on a refin of an old guitar can actually make the refin less noticeable and more "right," IMO.  And in a vintage restoration, that's what I'd go for... make it as 'right' as possible without calling attention to the fact that it was restored.

I don't think that would look all that good. I've seen it done before on a Jaguar and it didn't quite work. The reissue mint look too green for me when paired with aged vintage plastic in that particular case.

Reissue mint will lose some of the green if you stick it in the sun. I've done that with the one on my AVRI JM. It looks better now, but I still think its a little too much. I can live with it though.

You could always go white. The downside: not correct for a '62 if I'm not mistaking. But anyway it would look nice, IMO:

Another option could be to get a parchement one from pickguardian. I've recently heard a lot of good things about the material he uses for that. Supposedly, it goes green over time. If that's true, I guess that its a good alternative for vintage correct looking mint. And still relatively cheap compared to vintage tort.

New mint guards aren't my favorite.

The reason is, they're not really realistic, usually.

A real celluloid guard turns green over time, and the green is very non-uniform and complex looking.  A uniform, simple green color just looks weird to me.

There are some companies out there that simulate them so that they look pretty close.  Like this:

Looks a lot better to me than an off-the-shelf green.

Actually newer mint guards get less mint over time after a couple of years look more natural but can be overwhelming at first. I've heard good things about pickguardians parchment, it ages nice etc.

Mine is an allparts about 10 years old the mint has mellowed and it's warped a little. You can't really tell it's mint until you put it next to a guitar that has a stark white guard.
