BEST Tune-O-Matic for Mustang Cobain mod?

Post by antagony » Sun Feb 25, 2024 12:03 pm

I searched the Tech and Mods forums and did not find a definitive best solution for installing a Tune-O-Matic style bridge in a Mustang. I should preface, I played a 1962 Jaguar onstage for years and am scarred from the strings sliding and the tremelo causing me to fall out of tune. I have been building and converting my recent Jags and Mustangs Mustangs to have no trem system and top loading Tele-style bridges.

Now, I want to convert a Squire Classic Vibes Mustang to a Kurt-style Mustang. I plan on doing the reverse cigar and lockdown on the stop plate. But I want to see if there was a consensus best Tune-O-Matic style bridge that has worked with little to no body modification?

Does the Fender Adjusto-Matic drop in?

I've also read that out of all the Tune-O-Matic's the Gotoh GE103B-T is the best model because of Stud spacing (2 29/32" or 74mm) and String spacing (2 1/16"or 52mm). This could mean that a roller Tune-O-Matic with the same dimensions might work:

Lastly, if I abandon the TOM idea, and just want to lockdown the bridge from rocking completely. Will putting these on the posts do the trick?

Any input from modders that have done this successfully will be very appreciated.
thanks!

None of them are going to he direct drop ins. Try these. They might help. Pick something that will fit this spec and it'll go a lot smoother for you.

Thanks, I did look at those bushings. I guess I would just find a TOM bridge with M4 bridge posts if I had those?

I might also add, I am comfortable doing body work, as I imagine dropping in any TOM style bridge might require enlarging the post holes. So, my follow up is - which TOM bridge works best (height, string spacing, radius, etc.) with a simple hole enlarging on the body?

Just buy a Mustang bridge and tape the posts until they don't move. Then lock down the cigar. 30 for a bridge, 5 in bolts.

Problem solved.

Tuneomatics cause more problems than they solve. They're completely the wrong radius for a start and often have more rattles than a mustang bridge could ever have. Plus the destructive install. Sometimes the simple way is the best way
Silly Rabbit, don't you know scooped mids are for kids?

I am considering that, if I abandon the TOM idea, and just want to lockdown the bridge from rocking completely without tape. Will putting these on the posts do the trick?

The outer diameter should match the inner diameter of the bridge bushing and the mustang/jazzmaster/jaguar bridge posts will slide right into the holes and won't be able to rock.

I've tried the kaish amazon roller bridge on a bullet mustang, actually liked it quite a bit. I could never get used to the sharpness of most TOM saddles personally. Seems pretty tuning stable as well. Though not sure how compatible it is for the existing holes on a mustang.
