Baritone Jazzmaster Project Finished Pg. 2

Post by HNB » Mon Feb 19, 2024 9:47 am

I ordered a subsonic neck from Reverb and a one piece ash white blonde body painted by MJT off of Reverb last night. Not sure if I want to do Jazzy pickups or humbucker p90's yet. Thoughts?

I'm a fan of single coil in baritones! Humbuckers never sounded as good, but maybe some low-wind ones would be better?

Not sure yet. Pete from Chevelle uses JB's in his Subsonic.

I went with VMod pickups. They sounded pretty bright. Hoping that will work well with the baritone scale length. Ordered the other parts as well.

FWIW I slapped a subsonic neck on my Mascis SQJM. The stock p90s sounded way too hot and dirty for my ears. I changed them for AV65 and I'm much happier. Clearer, chimey, twangy (which was what I wanted for my bari sound).

I listened to VMod vs 65's and liked different things about both sets in the demo I listened to.

On My Baritone Jm I really like the JM neck pickup (JMV). I feel like a P90 or HB would be way to muddy and undefined.

I haven’t settled on a bridge pickup yet. I’ve tried a duncan quarter pounder, a Novak JMV and WRHB. So far, I’ve liked both Novaks the most, but am still unsure of where I want to take it.

I generally use the neck for cleaner tones and the bridge for gain. Baritones are tricky, because the bass can easily become overpowering. So if you are going to try a HB, I would look for something a little leaner on the bottom end.

I think a JB could work in this situation, because it is so mid focused.

I'd highly suggest single coils or WRHBs. I have EGC JM500s in my main baritone Jazzmaster, and they're absolutely perfect for the job. You want something that can handle the full range of frequencies.

The neck came in. While not rosewood, the wood is very pretty. You can see how much longer the neck is next to the full scale one.

Very pretty .
PF is a good wood. No not rosewood but different and nice.
Super smooth, when it gets worn in it’s also very comfortable too.
Don’t understand the hate for it.

Laurel on the other hand with its grains and pores that resemble a Brillo pad, no thank you.

Looking forward to seeing this come together.

I don't understand the hate either. It's not a bad looking wood, and if it's too light for you just hit it with some oil or something.
