Anyone have experience with using thinner strings with a Tuffset? I currently use 7-52s thanks to New Standard Tuning and a hand injury, so I was curious as to wether the Tuffset would be as tetchy as traditional offset bridges in regards to string tension and gauge used.
Hi Simon! That's a really great question, I haven't tried 7s but I'll make some educated guesses!

Firstly, the challenge is whether the downward pressure of the strings pushing into the saddle slots generates enough friction for the strings to grip the saddles effectively enough.

"Easiest" way to bump this up would be to shim the neck and raise the bridge pretty much as far as far as is comfortable, that would be the low-hanging fruit if you haven't tried it.

The string slots are at 60° so it's a bit grippier than a 90° string slot on a Mustang bridge for example, and being milled stainless steel it's naturally less slippery than the chrome plating you see on most bridges now.

One of the reasons vintage Jazzmaster / Jaguar bridges perform better is due to the steel (or corroded) surface of the threaded saddles, they do a better job of gripping than a new bridge.

I hope that helps, perhaps others can pitch on with more direct experience! Cheers

Dan

Man, I was watching my email like a hawk today and only caught it an hour later. I blame my hour long commute :P

That being said, I’m super stoked and hoping I got a good spot in line!

Just ordered one too, in brass just for a change!

Dan, will you make that Bearing Lock system available separately in the future for retrofitting to older Tuffsets?

Thank you so much guys!! Massively appreciate it and can't wait for you to try them, I really hope you love the bridge!

I don't know if you were aware Michel, but your Deluxemaster is the most liked post on the Tuffset Instagram! That post just took off - I think it's still trending. It has 4,500 likes which is about 10 times what we'd hope to get from a high-performing post!

I'll make sure I put some extra bearings in yours to cover the two bridges you already have. The bearing lock originated as a fix for some of the Wave 1 bridges that had excess machining fluid inside the posts. We found that cleaning them out with a cue tip worked ok, but sometimes it would still leave the lockers tweaking the posts when you tighten them up.

The bearing is a really simple way to prevent the torque from one screw from turning the other screw. It locked up quicker and felt more precise, and yes we've sent quite a few out to owners of Wave 1 and 2 bridges! Very happy to continue sending them out if ever people experience that issue.

Cheers all!

Interesting to learn I'm capable of trending on Instagram without doing social media :D
