Seymour Duncan Vintage Rails

Post by JSett » Mon Mar 27, 2023 8:50 am

I've been looking at something to put in the bridge position of my Guild S-70. They are strat-sized Super Distortion Singles as stock & I'd like to get rid of the hum with minimal interference so thought to go with some kind of rail humbucker in a single coil format.

Looking up, the 'Cool Rails' are still pretty hot (10.5k) and the next ones down are called 'Vintage rails'...

...which are listed as being only 2.5k - which seems insanely low. Am I missing something here? I'd like something in the 7-8.5k range really.
Silly Rabbit, don't you know scooped mids are for kids?

They're wired in parallel, that's why the resistance looks so low. Consider it a 10k rail humbucker in parallel mode (because it more or les is exactly that). Don't base things on resistance with rail pickups, the bobbins are so tiny that thin gauge wire has to be used, so resistance can look pretty high without sounding the way you'd expect a humbucker to with that resistance.

Why not try another Kinman? They have a lot of diversity in their strat pickups, more so than any other. The Kick In The Arse is aimed at PAF-like voicing with Fender-like dynamics. The Big Nine-O aims at P90 voicing with Fender dynamics.

Or what about a Zexcoil? They're super cool from a design perspective and they have a new line that is easier to manufacture and therefore more affordable than their old ones.

You could also go for a Wilde L298, it's a high output stacked design that doesn't sacrifice much high end.

For rail humbuckers, I've always like DiMarzio more than Duncan. The Cruiser and Chopper are interesting designs that you might like.

Damn, I should have known you'd throw tons of options my way :D option paralysis now!

Obviously my first thought was a Kinman of some kind but they are a lot of money for the experiment. Not been disappointed yet though.

The original plan was to get a new guard cut and stick some kind of noiseless P90 in there but was just toying with the easy option of stripping out all the fluff and just running one rail in the bridge position.

I will go and investigate the other options

Hah, sorry. The fact of the matter is that there are more strat-shaped pickup options than any other, so the world's your oyster. You can basically pick whatever type of tone you want as well as your desired look for the pickup, and there will still be at least half a dozen noiseless options to choose between.

dimarzio chopper maybe?
https://www.dimarzio.com/pickups/rail-h ... at/chopper
I looked at those. Dimarzio only display their output as a number, not a meter reading. The SDS1's in there at the moment are rated at 200 so the Chopper is notably hotter at 260, I probably need to go for 160-180 but the next jump down is 140.

Decisions decisions

DiMarzio cruiser? I’m looking at as an option for the mustang.
I have nothing to offer anybody, except my own confusion?
