Mustang VI / Baritone

Post by Skarrgus » Mon Nov 28, 2022 9:04 am

Got this slapped together a few days ago.
Squier Bullet Mustang body
DC Kunkle 30.25" conversion neck
Lace Alumitones
Wilkinson half Tele bridge

Currently tuned to Drop D1 with Winspear 16-90

So far, it's a lot of fun, but getting used to the thicker and floppier strings has been a pain for my playing style

Nice! But drop D on a short scale is madness.

I wouldn't call 30.25" a particularly short scale. I guess if you're approaching it as a Bass VI or a Baritone. As a Baritone it's rather high, as a Bass, rather low.
Silly Rabbit, don't you know scooped mids are for kids?

Yeah, it sounds fairly decent. At least, imo. I'm not totally sold on the VI or lower tuning, though. I like big, messy chords, and that tuning isn't really best for it. Or, at least none of the gauges I've tried have been ideal for the way I typically play.
So far, I've found I like tuning between G and A the most. All my other guitars (all ~30" scale)are currently in drop A, and it gives me the lows, but also has that aggressive guitar attack.

There is a crappy YouTube link in the OP, but I plan on whipping up a better demo when I've got the house to myself

What a cool guitar! :-*
Have you tried the new Fender Super 250 Bass VI set? They are 24 to 100 gauge and are pretty awesome and work well in drop d imo.

I haven't yet. Everytime I've gone to shop for them, they've been sold out. Hoping to grab a set or two next time I buy strings, though

Wow, that Meteora! :w00t:

Is this a Baritone to I suppose?
And a Lipstick in the neck?

The Mustang looks amazing to. 30,5“ from 24“?
I have to look up that brand. I‘ve been looking for a Big Headstock Baritone neck for over a year now!

Yep- they're all baritones.

I love the Meteora. It's also 30.25". Alumitone in the bridge, SD Lipstick in the neck.

I had to move the bridge on the Mustang back a bit, but the conversion neck fit wonderfully otherwise

That’s pretty cool. Does it balance on a strap at all?

It's got a little neck dive to it, about the same as my Dano. If I release it from playing position, it lands about mostly level with the floor
