''The Other Half'' project

Post by raphaël » Thu Sep 22, 2022 5:28 am

Oooooo I'm excited !!!!

Just got this in the mail. You all should recognize this :

Image

It's the '59 MM side from Highnumbers' former Jazzo-Sonic. He is restoring the '62 JM side, I'll try to get that side back to life.
Watching every heavy restoration threads on OSG, and there are plenty, always tickled me. I just wanted to try and Collin was super kind enough to work with me on this and sent me what remains of that body. From the US west coast to France west coast :)

Its current ''shape'' gave me the opportunity to explore many ideas. Here is the plan to this day :
- the bass/left side I will obviously add will be shaped after the Fender Maverick.
- the bass/left side will look like the other side. Yes it will be a hollow body guitar !
- as I don't have access to good tools, and as I don't really know the real state of my skills (maybe it'll be ok, maybe not, I don't know   ) I will work with someone else : a 78 yo man from my small town who creates violins, altos and cellos. He is as excited as I am about this project. We are going the put a thin top and shape two beautiful f-holes in it (one will also be cut through the pickguard). At this point I don't know : rounded edges? Bounded edges with ivory and ebony bindings? Adding some german carve?? Tomorrow will tell me ;D
- I think I'll put a JM/Jag trem.
- and I also think I'm quite decided on to put some Toasters in it. I clearly won't be able to buy a Rickenbacker someday. And if I can, it will be a 12 :)
- I have a spare '71 mustang bridge in my parts drawer. And then I'll need a neck. Thimbles are placed for a 25.5 scaled Fender neck.

So, yep, here it is !!
It's my autumn/winter project. It's going to be quite slow. But it will happen 8)

Wow, what a cool & ambitious idea. Love it!
I have nothing to offer anybody, except my own confusion?

So cool. I’m glad this will have a new life. You guys should both stash pictures and info on the original monstrosity in the control cavities for future generations to find.

Rad! I was hoping this one would get a new life after Highnumbers wrote it off in their thread!
Good luck on the project!

That's what gave me the envy ;)

I'm currently back home after a one hour and a half brainstorming with Jean-Paul. That's his name. That was super exciting. I had ideas, he told me it was doable, and even more ! So cool.
He even wants to do a guitar body for himself, and try to build a neck. And maybe I'll do it too ?? I don't know about that right now. But it's also exciting.
Back to the Other Half, I'll do things myself under his supervision. All I have to do right now is to get rid of that red and those unecessary small pieces of wood. Btw, I think it's a Duo Sonic. One bridge pickup cavity seems to be hidden under a piece of wood.
And then we'll get started 8) !!!
