I think what may be happening is there is a clear sanding sealer on the wood, followed by the tinted topcoat - so sanding off the topcoat exposes first the sealer layer, then the wood. Wood will take stain but the sealer won't. You may have to mask it off and sand through the clearcoat in the white areas.

Hmmmm. I thought so too - maybe it‘s also just hard to reach/put pressure on with a sanding paper. I got some files for maybe more detailed working but I‘m afraid they take away too much too quick due to their grit…

Or .... you could tint/color the light area with something and clearcoat over it once the color is right. I mention this because I think it may be difficult to sand through the sealer to raw wood and still not have a light edge or outline of the sealer around the area you sand.

To tint and color such repairs I have used Tru Oil, Minwax Polyshades Golden Oak (this is tinted poly and available in small cans @ hardware stores, WalMart, etc), or Zinser Bullseye amber shellac. The polyshades might be a good option for you. It is available in several colors. Good luck!
