Lipstick pickups for Jag/Mustang?

Post by Pacafeliz » Tue Jun 07, 2022 9:37 am

Hey there!
Looked for an info thread here, but didn't find anything in one place, so here we go.

Since I'm going to be swapping out the Squier pickups anyway, I got interested in using lipsticks for once.

So most or them are made/built for/like Danos, but I'd want them in a Jag or Mustang, with as few mods (routing) as possible.

I'm only finding the Seymour Duncan SLS-1 , are there any other good ones out there? Or can the cheaper Dano ones be modded to fit easily?

Thanks!

Pat.

I’ve looked into this before. If I’m not mistaken, I think Novak makes Lipsticks that will drop into Jaguars with no mods. Personally though, I rather like the vibe of original size even if modding might be a possibility.

Any strat sized lipstick tube should fit a Mustang but as far as I know, Curtis Novak is the only person who makes a jaguar replacement.

I have a pair of the Novak "strat" sized lipsticks.
I'd highly recommend them. I did a vintage wound neck and medium wound bridge. I previously had a pair of the Duncans and there is just no comparison, the Novaks are hands down better to my ears.

Strat sized would be the easy way - but leaving gaps in the original pickguard.
Novak would be nice but with customs they are so damn expensive to get to Europe.

I ordered Dead on 67 pups from Reverb for a similar project - but Reverb fucked up the zip code on their shipping label and they never arrived… they would have had another mounting system (which could be changed/modified if one would look into it.

For the PUPs: the Danelectro/Allparts ones are really cheap (<30€ each) - but they only listed one kind of pickup, no Bridge/Neck/Middle options - not speaking of rw/rp. If you want that you‘d probably be better off with Novaks or Duncans!

But I also just got into that idea/thematic only a year or so ago… and still don‘t have tried them recently except for my behind the bridge cheapo.

I once had a chat with Oliver Ackermann - and he uses TOG (tricked out guitar / „tone of god“?) Lipsticks in most of his Jags.

Yeah the ones in mine are the Strat ones and there’s a gap on either side of each pickup that can look weird, though I’ve grown to like it. I have a bag of Danelectro ones that I’ve been waiting to drop into something forever though. I should really get on that.

Hmm... how many can you cram into a swimming pool route? Maybe with individual on/off toggles or a crazy rotary switch?

Yeah that’d be pretty cool. A CAR 3 lipstick Jag would look so awesome.

If you had a strat with a swimming pool route, you could fit in like 7 or 9 lipsticks for that old, over the top, Japanese crazy guitar approach.

.

I've seen some low cost ebay lipstick pickups before. Just get those.

Many of the low cost pickups actually measure low capacitance like the hand-wound-boutique pickups out there ... suspiciously indicating they could very well be hand scatter-wound. Order a couple of sets and test drive them.

Yeah, cheap pickups can be miss or really hit. I've used some that were serviceable and I've used others that somehow worked fantastically! When I built my pine tele years ago, I put in some GFS '52 tele pickups. I've since bought a pair of Mares to upgrade them but I've never installed them because the cheap GFS ones match the guitar perfectly and I'm kinda scared to mess with it at all.

I don't have an opinion on this one, but if you do it make sure you wire it for a series option too. Lipstick pickups in series is the best.

i have done this on a couple of occasions. i usually use the standard danelectro style lipsticks with the tall brackets and just straighten them out most of the way with pliers so the legs are flattened but too long, cut off the excess (hack saw or dremel) so they fit into the jaguar, then drill new holes into the brackets to screw them direct to the wood.
works well and you only need a few tools. hope that made sense and helps. good luck either way.
