Re: DIY Celluloid Spitfire Tortoise Knowledge Dump / Discussion
I think everyone who loves a beautiful vintage tort has been in this exact "C'monnn!! There's GOT to be a way to do this!" spot
Nice to see someone else taking a crack at it!
Thinking back to the Spitfire guards I had in the past - and I may be mis-remembering, here (if so, sorry) - I seem to recall there being a bit of in-development chatter that the mix of colours included clear bits as well. Poured/dropped in at random and brighter "droplets" dripped in to the clear, so they'd hold a bit more of their integrity and contrast against the reds/oranges. Some of the deeper, more defined areas of the earlier, thicker guards I had seemed to reflect that process.
And then, there was the addition of the thin, clear top-lam surface. Not sure if that still happens with the newer guards, but I remember the earlier ones delaminating around the screw holes.
Of course... once you get the technique right... you HAVE to make sure you get the angle of the bevel right...
All the best!

I’ve done some epoxy fills in the past- I called it “mother of bowling ball” to explain it to my clients.

Doesn't look like vintage Fender tort, but it does look awesome. Big fan of that pattern.

Yep. It looks different to the vintage Fender stuff but pretty awesome nonetheless.
You'll get there, eventually.

Although this isn’t Fender 60s tort, this is still a nice tort. Well donepostboredom wrote: ↑Thu Apr 14, 2022 6:16 amI Like the Black bobbin style Tort that spitfire does for their JM's.
Figured that might a way get a win and keep moving forward. I like how this peice turned out.
This Color combo is definitely suited best to that Metallic grey that black bobbin uses. So i'm going to try do this again but with more red.

Not sure if this would work, but what if you used something like a rake head or comb to agitate the solution? Dipping something in with a bunch of little fingers may be able to give you that smaller speckled that is so uniquely Fender. Not using it to stir, but just dipping the fingers in and out throughout out the piece.
