If it's any more help you can read through Spitfire's original discussion thread on Who makes/sells the best Tort?, although you've probably seen it already. It evolved into his own R & D thread and on into finessing his final product.
I had a quick look myself & several posts have been deleted which, at first glance, suggests some of his methods have now become trade secrets.

I can see what the problem is.postboredom wrote: ↑Sat Jan 22, 2022 5:54 amThank, I’ve heard about this thread.
But the link does work. I can’t read any posts there.
I think it’s been closed, or you have to be invited to read it.
Once Spitfire had perfected his product he was asked to move the entire thread to the "For Sale/Trade" section as he was starting to market his product.
You can only gain access to that section with 50+ posts. Not thread fillers like "+1" or "cool guitar!!" but wholesome contributions. The mods will block your entry if they feel you're just post-padding to gain access to people's gear sales.

Hmm. I'm already seeing a lot of what I want to see here...postboredom wrote: ↑Thu Feb 17, 2022 2:33 pmI have test results.
This thread got me just what i needed. some different perspectives.
I think i was thinking much to deeply about making 'real' celluloid.
So, I've decided to go the epoxy route. I was watching a video of some guys pouring epoxy floors.. and one dude, although he used ugly colours, was getting a tortoise shell type pattern on the floor.
For all these test pics, i mixed some colours and poured directly on to some white black white pvc material.
This first pic, is a small 1.5"x2.0" peice. It looks grainy because i used Tumeric to get the orangey red. I also used food colouring for the red/yellow. And then some green for the dark bit.
Is there an additive that will thin the resins to achieve better/thinner levelling properties during setup? How does the stuff bond to modern pick guard material?
If the look can be achieved (looks like it's possible) or even improved, I say eff celluloid nitrate and all its nastiness.

Great work!
With the thickness issue, is it possible to have some kind of 'platter' rig whereby, after you've poured and painted the tort pattern, you can press down something to a preset thickness to squeeze out excess while it sets?
Just spitballin

A good lump of 1” birch ply would probably work well. Heavy and very flatpostboredom wrote: ↑Thu Feb 17, 2022 4:32 pmOn that point tho, i would probably do this, by placing a clean piece of polypropylene plastic over top. with some thickness guides all around the perimeter of the pickguard, then lay some sort of flat heavy thing on it. It would probably work!

That very first pic is great as it's already getting in the right ballpark.
Are you still planning on trying to get close to the look of 50s/60s Fender nitrocellulose?
