Another Player Jag conversion

Post by threewordname » Tue Dec 21, 2021 10:58 am

I have a new to me guitar coming in that needs some work, because people do dumb things to perfectly fine instruments.

Not sharing details yet, but it's orange

This guy showed up today. (Trying to post photos but my Flickr account is weird)

I got it for less than asking. Unfortunately that "hand painted" pickguard looks like a popcorn ceiling. I'll be swapping that out and adding some chrome

So here are some pictures:

The wide shot. This is my first actual fender, and my first real offset. Pretty pumped.

Here's a close up on the pickguard. It looks like someone left stickers on it when they painted it, and didn't sand at all. I might try to rescue it, but long term I'm changing this to SS, so the mangled guard will be going away.

I also found a small nick in the back of the neck, in the cowboy chord region. I'll have to fill this with super glue and scrape it back.

Didn't photograph it, but the trem arm basically sits on the bridge. I will need the help of Bender Bending Rodriguez

Welcome to the club (Hexes did one before me I think?). I bought mine new late 2020 and slowly worked on it as it was a bit rough on the frets and fingerboard and general set up. Once I got that sorted I swapped the pickups for second hand PV 65, pickguard to match and some different metal plates to suit the simpler layout I prefered. Finally last year I stripped it and refinished it in CAR.

From this (I'd already changed the knobs by this point):

After the electrical mods, replacing pickguard, etc. I also gave the Pau Ferro fingerboard a couple of treatments using Montyspresso wax which is why it's darker in this picture than the one above:

To this:

The white slide switch is a bypass for the Eric Clapton mid boost circuit I fitted below the hex plate. The knob on the hex plate adjusts the amount of mid boost, taking the sound from more typical thin and wiry Jaguar tones to something fatter. I blocked the trem on mine; as in I tightened the screw to lock it so if a string breaks it won't lose tension. I never use trems anyway.

It was the cheapest new Player Jaguar I could find at the time, but even so I ended up spending about as much as a Vintera would have cost me. Bonus being I've got a nitro finish in a colour I couldn't buy without spending £££ for a USA model, it has a Staytrem bridge, PV65 pickups instead of V type, the mid boost and above all; it looks unique.

Thanks! I love the neck pickup. The bridge is fine, but I already have too many bridge HB guitars.

Does anyone have a suggestion on a bridge pickup to pair with it?

I wanted a cheap but good jaguar again, so I did fender pure vintage 65 pickups in both positions and am very happy with them. I’m never happy balancing single coils in the neck with humbuckers in the bridge, though.

Putting AVRI spec pickguard and chrome plates on this is possible, just need to add a few holes and move a couple others if that’s your goal.

do you want single coils in the bridge? The PV65s work well for me on most anything but super high gain of course.

Same as Hexes, mine has (secondhand) PV65s in it, but I nearly bought another secondhand pair of V-mod type (think that's what they are called?) from a MIM model. To be honest, if I could have found a single neck pickup from another Player I would have tried that first as I quite liked the neck, just not the humbucker. Even with the tap switch it just never sounded right to me.

Rad, I was leaning towards a pv65 in the bridge, but wasn't sure if it would play nice with the neck pickup that's already there. Do you know the resistance on the stock neck pickup?

I know I could figure this out by walking across my house and opening up the control plate, but are there 1 meg pots in there?

Edit: the neck pick up is 9.5k the bridge is 12k

Sorry I don't know the pot's value or neck pickup value and my original ones are still on the original control plate that is in my spares box in the loft. Just to clarify; I have both pickups as PV65 because a set came up for sale used, just incase you thought I meant I had just fitted a PV65 in the bridge with the original neck. Not to say that wouldn't work though, might need to juggle the pickup heights a bit more to get them to balance.

Is that Capri Orange or Candy Tangerine? I'm not familiar with these models (or if this one has been repainted), so forgive a boneheaded question (more where that came from, I assure you). :P

the player jags came in capri orange. I have one too and absolutely love the color. it was the cheapest jaguar body I could find.

can’t wait to see what OP does to this one.
