John Squire Custom Jag Build!
Hey guys,
It's been a while since I've documented a design on here!
I had someone get in touch through my Custom Shop asking about making a John Squire (of the Stone Roses) custom Jag.
The story of the original guitar is that John approached a guitar builder about remodelling the body shape of his Jaguar, and adding some humbuckers. They decided to build a body from scratch based loosely around the Jazz Bass shape, and transplant the neck, plates, bridge etc. onto it.
A while later, it seems John was having issues with the Jag's bridge and vibrato system so decided to have it routed out for a Strat vibrato. He elected to keep the Jag vibrato plate in place, as there was no real need to remove it - but it became redundant / cosmetic.
As a replica of the original, I'm routing to put both a Strat and Jag vibrato on there. Below are my vectors and a photograph of the original I based them on:
And here it is after conversion to 3D and implementation of the contours and body routes (to check there are no conflicts between the cavities):
I have a lovely lightweight chunk of quarter-sawn idigbo lined up for this project - tomorrow I will extract the toolpaths, and Wednesday or Thursday I plan to cut it. Stay tuned!
Cheers
Dan

That’s rad that the Custom Shop contacted you!
Your roundover looks more round than the original one (which looks like a Tele, the should’ve gone with a Jaguar roundover IMO). Is that deliberate?

Re: John Squire Custom Jag Build!
I should clarify - through the Custom Shop section of my website, not through the FCS! A boy can dream, though!
I've gone with the Jag roundover - I agree, the original looks a little tighter, probably 1/4" rather than 1/8" though, I think. After sorting out the vectors, it seemed there wasn't any part of the pickguard that would conflict with a full 3/8" roundover, so that's what I've gone ahead with

This was my main inspiration for the Rankmaster you built!

Yes!!! I remember, though I feel like the journey we went on and what we ended up with was enough different and very cool in its own right. The little sharp kink in the pickguard next the the bridge and the finish / pickguard colour choices brought some SG flavour into the mix which I feel blends really well.
There are certain things about this more accurate replica that bug the hell out of me - mostly, how much fatter the bass-side lower bout is than the treble side! But I'm kind of learning to love it.
Made the cut a couple of days ago - pics soon!

Re: John Squire Custom Jag Build!
Here she is off the machine - excuse the bright orange filler, this board had several pinholes and this one is for a solid shell pink finish! The usual caveats - there's currently no roundover or finish sanding. Nowhere near done yet!
Really nice board this one, pinholes aside - really lightweight and almost dead quarter-sawn! It also has some subtle ribbon figure, but the preponderance of pinholes and micro-knots (including the rather interesting one cutting right across the arm contour!) mean this one was always going to be non-cosmetic. Still, a good example of the cleanest looking wood not always being the best. This one has a very loud and musical tap tone!
Cheers

Re: John Squire Custom Jag Build!
Interesting but slightly irrelevant fact...
Philippe Dubreuille, the guy who made the custom Jag, was the first luthier in London to lay hands on my '59 Jazzmaster. Back then it had dodgy wiring, a Squier neck & a crappy paintjob.
He put me onto another guy, Joe, who eventually refinished the guitar in a basement they shared on Denmark Street.
Lovely guys, both of them.

Nice!
I've almost been tempted to build one of these too.

Hey John! Send me a PM if you like!
I realised I forgot to post progress on this from Jesse of Brown Bear Guitars who is handling the build, finish and wiring over in Canada:
