Installed PV65's in my AmPro JM

Post by jdr1014 » Mon Nov 22, 2021 7:36 pm

As the titles says, I installed a set of Pure Vintage 65 pickups in my AmPro 1 Jazzmaster and they are fantastic !

I bought this brand new JM at a great closeout price when the AmPro2 was released. I generally prefer vintage spec guitars and have quite a few, including a terrific AVRI62 JM. Nonetheless, I have really liked the Mystic Seafoam AmPro JM with the maple neck since it was released. Love the finish, love the neck, don't use or miss the rhythm circuit.......but never really was that excited by the V-Mod pickups.

The PV65 pickups were the final piece that made this Jazzmaster just about perfect for me. I really love the aesthetics, quality, and playability of this guitar........and now it sure has that distinct sound that only comes from a good Jazzmaster. I was familiar with the PV65 pickups but thought they were perhaps a bit too bright for my taste. Finally decided to try them but with the stock 500k AmPro pots instead of the usual 1meg pots. Very pleased with that decision - certainly plenty of treble and jangly JM goodness without any harsh ice=pick highs. Highly recommended! :)

The AV65 Jaguar and Jazzmaster pickups are fantastic... and very well priced compared to the competition, I'd say.

Agree, some of my favorite pickups.

The PV65's really did give me exactly the vintage JM tones I was missing in the AmPro JM. I am not sure if going to the usual1meg pots would be a bit too bright for my tastes, but am very satisfied with it now. Perhaps the maple fretboard also adds a little tonal brightness....

I also have a set of PV65 Jaguar pickups to install in my BMM 50th Anniversary Jag. Same objective - to get more "vintagey-sounding" tones out of a guitar that I otherwise love the looks and playability of. I bought both of these guitars knowing full well that the stock pickups might not be to my liking, but felt that swapping out the pickups with Fender PV65's would be relatively easy and inexpensive. Hopefully I will be as successful when I do the Jag! :)

Tonight I installed a set of PV65 Jaguar pickups in my Burgundy Mist 50th Anniversary Jag. Very pleased with this swap too.

The PV65 JM and Jag pickups are both great vintage sounding pickup sets at a very reasonable price IMO. Gave me exactly what I wanted in both of these guitars. :)

I put PV65s in my Player Jaguar after I converted it into a more traditional style Jaguar. I love them. 8) Mine has an Eric Clapton mid boost, so the pot values are all different anyway (it's effectively an active guitar), but the 250K/ 0.022uF tone pot/cap seems to work well in my set up. Plenty of bright 'headroom' available with the tone pot up full, so I tend to dial it back a bit and add in a touch of mid boost for a warmer/fatter sound when needed. If I just want (what I believe is) a more traditional Jaguar tone, turn the mid boost to zero and the tone up full...more twang than my Telecaster. :)

Didn't hurt that I got mine used off Reverb for a decent saving over new price, so were much cheaper than the other custom wound options I was starting to look into.
