Odd custom Jazzmaster wiring

Post by horse » Thu Oct 14, 2021 11:43 am

Finally got round to wiring up my jazzmaster project and surprise surprise, it didn't work. 😖 Well, I've only tried it with tapping the pickups while trying all combinations of switches, and in some positions the neck pickup comes through but nothing from the bridge at all.

The plans were kinda cobbled together from various sources and involved a degree of guesswork. Also some of the parts aren't standard so that may have added some complications. The phase switch and series/parallel switch are both 6 pole on/on 2 way switches and there's a blend control in place of a 3 way toggle because I'm an oaf.

Here's the diagram I wired it from, there is also a treble bleed on the volume control and some other earthed connections that aren't shown, but I don't think they make any difference... Hoping I've missed something obvious and easy to fix

In case it wasn't obvious I don't really understand electrics, but can more or less hold a soldering iron without burning my face.

Any help much appreciated!

The rockers are like these but without any markings, needed something fairly flat that I wouldn't knock with ham-fisted strumming. :D

try grounding the yellow wire on the phase switch that connects the diagonal pins

I've only been able to test by tapping the pickups so far as I wanted to make sure it was functional before I committed to final assembly. I'll check again but I think the tone maybe did nothing either. Have you spotted some more erroneous wiring? :-[

I think the green and the yellow wire should be connected together where the yellow wire is on the tone pot. And I think you will get the series sound only when the blend pot is on the neck position

Ok... so no green wire on the centre lug?

Is there a way of getting series in both positions? I remember something about the signal maybe being off in one extreme of blend position but it's so long since I started this it's all a bit hazy. If it can only get series in 1 position it would probably be better in bridge position as that's where it'll be at 90% of the time.

The green and yellow together on the lug where the yellow is. There is a solution to "bypass" the blend when in series mode, did it in my jazzmaster but I don't remember how I wired it. I'll have a look at it later and get back to you

Got signal coming from both pickups now which is ace! Weirdly though with the series/parallel switch in one position the signal goes silent at BOTH extremes of the blend control! Don't know how I've managed that. Still don't think the bass cut is doing anything, I've earthed the back of the pot, could that mess with it somehow? 🤔

My fault, the blend pot cuts one side and opens the other, and the other way around so either way its cutting the signal. If the blend pot is not essential replace it with a 3way switch, works perfectly on my jazzmaster. If you have to have the blend pot then you'll have to get a tpdt switch for the series/parallel. I don't have experience with the bass cut pot wiring so unfortunately can't help you with that, but seems fine from what I see on the g&l legacy wiring
