Re: Yamaha SG5 /SG7 build
didn't have too much time this week end but a mass reduction was operate
i have trouble with my big router bit ,it doesn't go in my router table (too big for the hole diameter 40 mm ,need 54 mm )i have change the bearing for a 1/2 one instead of 9,5 mm deliver with it
and the more i look at it is really hudge (and scary too ) as i would not use it with the router in hand ,it is too unstable
need to do something to support it

Re: Yamaha SG5 /SG7 build
drilling day
for tuners ,bridge ,neck plate
i have also put a 9,5 radius that i can on all the body
for those who ask why the big chamfer ,it is for digging the inserts of the bridge ,as i don't find the right one i take some tom one and increase the hole for fron 5,3 mm to 6mm in the bridge (i hate big insert but i have only this one )

Re: Yamaha SG5 /SG7 build
i have some spare time to prepare the drilling for the hole of the insert in steel for the pups ,again at 20 mm cause i haven't the right size for ,maybe 13mm finish ? but i prefer to have more than less cause i haven't finish the full drawing of the bobin
as you see i have 2 more deep cause the mill was silly, the automatic advance was engage by someone (who ? )
not important i have to surface them again
size 5,5 mm larg by 60 mm long by 20 mm hight
i have one with 50 mm spacing for neck and 2 with 52 mm for bridge
i can do the drilling (2,5mm)and the threading(M3) at home ,but the spacing is too much hard with a colon drill ,10 &nd 10,2 mm is undoable without a visualisation

Re: Yamaha SG5 /SG7 build
today i go to the post office to pick up a package
THANKS VERY MUCH MARK
for the gift it will be really helpfull
a Yamaha bass pickup
the size is the same than guitar one ,only number of pole change (4 against 6)
with this and the mesurement ofThe PearDream i can make my one easely
the trouble is the screws are M3,5 really rarer in europe i think ,must be japanese standard at time (during 60)same trouble as thread for Aria trem, old threading that have been dicontinued by now ( i haved a customer in my old job who works for aerospace and use it for old plane )
the solution is going to M3 or M4 more easy to find ,screws and thread
the surprise is this pickups works and is 10,6 Kohms ,then i will not broke the scotch to see the winding ,too much risk of breaking it
then tomorow i give it to my friend to modelise it and print my cover and bobin
this parts seems in good way now need to look at for the trem

Re: Yamaha SG5 /SG7 build
Only saw this thread now... Very cool indeed and now I understand your posts on my thread much better.
Yesterday I took the dimensions of my SG-2 neck pickup and reading your thread, I now realise that the SG-2 bridge pickup bobbin must be slightly larger to accommodate the wider string spacing on the bridge position. Is that correct?
If so, I cannot use the neck pickup as a template.

Re: Yamaha SG5 /SG7 build
i can't tell for sure ,but you have to mesure the distance at the bridge ,E bass to E treble
on mine i use a 52 mm bridge that why i need a bigger distance (neck dimension of jazzmater ),and the front pups is angled then need another spacing
on the sg2 the pups are not angled and jazzmaster or jaguar have same pole spacing between neck and bridge
ask an owner of sg2 but it could be possible they are the same

Re: Yamaha SG5 /SG7 build
I checked and I think bobbin, steel and cover are all the same. The pole holes are drilled wider apart to accommodate the wider string spacing.ludobag1 wrote: ↑Tue Nov 09, 2021 11:01 ami can't tell for sure ,but you have to mesure the distance at the bridge ,E bass to E treble

Ludo, can you please tell me where you buy the pole pieces?ludobag1 wrote: ↑Sun Sep 26, 2021 10:21 amThanks so much ! more than i need i think
this afternoon i have source my rosewood fretboard and a flat steel bar of 5,5mm of large(that was by estimation to be able to thread it with m3 ) by 20 mm of height and 400 mm of lenght then with the 60mm needed by pups i can do some ,find the screw for also ,need to order ph screws M3 lenght 10 mm size of head 5mm (it seems to be the same )7,5 € for 100 (will have spare )
the 2 magnets is a thing i haven't think ,or see ,that s cool to know ,i have find a source for but them but they are not cheap 6 euros each one (more than alnico!)
Cheers

Re: Yamaha SG5 /SG7 build
sorry don't know the software ,i have to ask my friend,as i hate informatic and computer i don't have real interrest in
he is doing the modeling and the printing ,i just ask and he sais yes i can ,then ta da the way of he do it doen't pickup much my interrest ,he offer me 2 solutions ,wire printing or resin printing we need to try to see the best result but resin is much expensive (only thing i know )
for the screws that i have to order, they are phillips screws H round head m3 x 10 in steel (not stainlesssteel to have magnetic propriety) they are not the same as original who can't be find easely M3,5mm with a head specific
i try to be near the original but i am not going to cut hair in half for being vintage accurate ,i prefer to find something cheaper ,easyer to source ,that i can redo later if needed (a sg2 or 3,and a sg2C would be some next project for the next year as my friend who build furniture have buy lot of ash for a customer and will have lot of offcut for making body ,and as i have lot of mapple just need some rosewood fretboard )i am already full of jazzmaster need to change model and yamaha ones is really appealing
have some time to think on trem
i choose the easy way jazzmaster guts in home plate (the svg one is really complicated and need lot of milling ,drilling ,threading )
what do you think of shaller tuner ?
the pro really light and here
the cons push bushing and looks different
