Yamaha SG2A /SG5 build
since i have sale my 2 SGV ,300 and 800 i miss them much (moreover i am flat broke and can' t buy another one price have too much increase these years 750 € for a 300 or 1000 for a 800) and the older one sg 5 or sg7 are near 2000 € or just a bit less du to japan shipping ,i remember that i have sale them cause the neck are too slim at nut for my taste
then why not make one
i have some wood ,lot of things like fret, truss rod ,ect the it could be a small budget guitar just need to buy tuners ,some pots , a pickguard blank(i have one too short for the shape )
body will be fraké,limba ,corina (i have much)
neck flamed mapple in 3 parts ,2 for the neck itself (one scrap cut in half and reglue) one for the head (scraps i have too short for a top)with binding for the head also and 0 fret
fretboard i have doussier (don't know english name )not to pretty but time will tell maybe if i find some rosewood near i have also some padouk or wengé instead or white ebony (don't like it very much it is very eyes catching and don't works with all esthetics)
the trem will be home made i hesitate between a mosrite trem and jazzmaster one with a plate homemade
i have a roller bridge (ps i know you can find russian near in look but i find them real expensive for rotten part)
pickups at first jag pups with printed cover to look like yamaha one (one in neck slanted and 2 at bridge )
controle one vol ,one tone ,one blend ,and a 3 way toggle
color at first i would like a candy orange with a pearloid guard ,need to source some knobs also

Re: Yamaha SG5 /SG7 build
big fan of these– i'll be keeping an eye on this one
definitely not a budget option, but i think the mastery vibrato tailpiece looks pretty similar to what was used on the original SG5/SG7... you could route for one and install a squier unit temporarily.

i know not the most practical BUT i always thought these guitar would look good with a mustang trem.

Re: Yamaha SG5 /SG7 build
gluing time
the mastery is a solution but not a budget solution
i can do my own plate like it and take the pivot and knife from a fender trem like i have done on my marauder ,it is a possibility but i look at redoing a mosrite trem (love the feel of it and the look very much)
if someone have and sg 5 or SG 7 yamaha how the pups are in Kohms ? and how they are build like p90 ? i have to do some search

Re: Yamaha SG5 /SG7 build
I am definitely following this
Regarding the pickups, I doubt that they follow the P90 arrangement with two magnets facing each other. It is actually pretty hard to find any information on those! They do look like what you find on Teisco / Kawai / other Japanese guitars of that time though.
This is the only picture I found of the inside of those tall Teisco single-coils with the Philips head screws:
From here I'd say that those screws go into a machined rubber ceramic magnet. Those are usually wound to about 5kOhms, but in this particular case I'd say the wire is AWG 43 since the bobbin is on the smaller side. I'd guess that's about 5000 turns (the cool thing with AWG 43 is that give or take the dimensions of the core, 1 turn equals 1 Ohm), which sounds about right compared to what I hear in YouTube demos of the SG.

niksureal did at least one of these with a mustang trem–honestly, i don't think they look good on a mustang, but i remember it working quite well on the yamaha body shape.s_mcsleazy wrote: ↑Sat Sep 11, 2021 10:25 ami know not the most practical BUT i always thought these guitar would look good with a mustang trem.

Re: Yamaha SG5 /SG7 build
not fan of mustang trem ,know for being a little unstable
for the pups my research have done nothing but i find the pics of my friend Popapop (still here ? Hi)
there is pics up of the pups without cover
i think the pups are made like ceramique strat with a magnet under the pole
on the yamaha the pole are screw with a U shaped metal inside the bobin and the screw are threated in and the magnet are glued on the base on the U with hole for the screw to pass
it is my thinking ,dont know if it is truth but doable
will try a drawing soon ,but if i find some u shaped steel with the right size i can ask somebody to print me the bobin (in fact 2 parts one with the screw in and the u shape an another for the wiring

Re: Yamaha SG5 /SG7 build
I happen to have a pickup from an SGV hanging around waiting for a friend, so I snapped a few pics. The pickup reads 11.6K on my multimeter. I hope this is useful.

Re: Yamaha SG5 /SG7 build
thanks so much for the pics ThePearDream
it must be a svg 700 cause the gold screws
in fact from what see the bobin is made around a ferrous core with the screw in (the upper part black with the holes and the 2 stripe is purely cosmetics)
the magnet is under like stratish with false pole ,we know the magnet are ferrite and you give the 11,6 k ohms value
then we can suppose the wire is 43 awg (or 44awg )(du to the size of bobin H x LXl look like a stratish bobin form ) it can be approximate to be in the order to 6000 to 10000 turn (p 90 is 10000 trn of 42 Awg for 8 to 9 K ohm for a more flat bobin )
then need to try ......
one things that surprise me is the 11,6 KOhms cause my mosrite pups who were 14K overdriven my ac 4 10 but i don' t remember my sgv 300 did (maybe the weaker magnet ,to bad i have sold it before take some mesure )
thanks for the rare information ,i have lot of things to think now, to try and to source part for ,the harder will be the ferrous part with the six thread for the screws ,the magnet could be more easyer to find and i will ask a friend for 3D print of the bobin and cover

Re: Yamaha SG5 /SG7 build
cut the block for the headstock in 2 half (35mm /2 = 15,5 mm and 16,5 mm after planning )
cut the 13° angle
seems to follow the plan

Re: Yamaha SG5 /SG7 build
done some template for guard and headstock
cut the body
anf i have think of this ,i have scraps for the guard too small for it but if i do a aluminium plate for the pots it wil fit and i will have enought to make a di pinto headstock
pro ,i use a scrap(save the planet !) and i can do also the switch point too in aluminium better for shelding ,and will avoid to pull off string for electronics maintenance
cons ,it is not vintage correct (but who cares ?) don't know if will look nice ?(think marauder )
diameter of pole screws (head only)?
bobin ,hight ?(plastic part )
in metric please

Mr ThePearDream if you are here could you put some mesurement pleaseThePearDream wrote: ↑Tue Sep 14, 2021 7:33 pmI happen to have a pickup from an SGV hanging around waiting for a friend, so I snapped a few pics. The pickup reads 11.6K on my multimeter. I hope this is useful.

Re: Yamaha SG5 /SG7 build
The pole screw heads are 4.95mm dia. x 3.5mm high
The bobbin width is 21.65mm
The bobbin (top) length is 73.9mm
The bobbin (outer) height (not including the extension on the base) is ~12.5mm
The extra plastic on the base adds ~5.8mm to the height
The bobbin (inner) height is 9.65mm
The bobbin interior cut out for the gold metal keeper is ~6mm wide x ~60mm long
The coil is ~17mm wide x ~70mm long
Magnets are 10mm wide x 58mm long x ~5.8mm high and there are two of them stacked on top of each other. One is secured inside the plastic molding of the bobbin base and the second is the more visible one which is slightly offset toward what I assume is the bass end of the pickup by ~3mm and epoxied? to the other magnet.
Let me know if you need anything else. I'm happy to help if I can.

Re: Yamaha SG5 /SG7 build
Thanks so much ! more than i need i think
this afternoon i have source my rosewood fretboard and a flat steel bar of 5,5mm of large(that was by estimation to be able to thread it with m3 ) by 20 mm of height and 400 mm of lenght then with the 60mm needed by pups i can do some ,find the screw for also ,need to order ph screws M3 lenght 10 mm size of head 5mm (it seems to be the same )7,5 € for 100 (will have spare )
the 2 magnets is a thing i haven't think ,or see ,that s cool to know ,i have find a source for but them but they are not cheap 6 euros each one (more than alnico!)
