Making decals...who can help?

Post by javier-san » Thu Sep 09, 2021 8:37 am

I am thinking of ordering a BB&B neck for my shell pink jaguar from PST guitars. I know, it's not ethical to ask them to put a Fender Jaguar decal on the headstock and I don't feel completely comfortable (skills-wise) to put one after it has been shipped to me.

Would anyone be willing to help me make a decal that say "Faker" in the Fender type and the traditional Jaguar type. I feel like I have seen it here before!

If you want a logo that doesn't require any non-original letters, and looks like "Fender" without looking closely, there's the ever-popular "Ferden" (it's a thing over at the TDPRI):

This is especially easy to do on a spaghetti logo, since the "en" and "er" are in isolated groups, so they're easy to swap around. Just a thought :)

A friend made Faker Jaguar decals layout for me. It's more like a Transition Logo and the colour matches not really well. I can email you a PDF for printing decals yourself. PM me if interested.

I do make custom decals. It isn't hard to make your own. If you have a laser printer, you just buy laser waterslide paper to print your design on. Normally people print them backwards and color in the metallic part with a metallic pen or paint marker with a small point. :)

I had mine made by Rothko & Frost and sent to PST.

It's a maple BB&B neck that I'm using to turn a natural ash Sixty-Six into more of a 70's Jazz Bass aesthetic, so this is what I went with. It's the gold outline with black fill, 70's style.

I have pet birds and used to work at the Wild Bird Care Centre so "Feather" seemed to fit. And I didn't want it to be too close to an actual Fender copy, so I went lowercase instead of all caps for the model name.

Still trying to figure out whether that was a good call, but either way, what's done is done.

I was trying to straddle the line between referencing the original and making it clear that I'm not trying to pretend it's a Fender neck. The "Ferden" thing is stupid and too close, if you ask me. I wouldn't ask Scott to put that on a neck, it's asking for trouble.

I'd go with a personal touch. My model name was a pun based on the original model name and the look I was targeting, and the brand name actually meant something personal, so it felt like an OK balance point.

Honestly, the whole point here is that both you (past tense) and the OP are straddling a line, and your goal is presumably to make the guitar not seem "off" when you look at it rather than create brand confusion. I agree that I wouldn't ask someone else who runs a legitimate business to put a Ferden decal on it. Whether the decal is stupid or not is debatable - I just remember this being a funny thing on the TDPRI because it came up weekly for a period of time. Note that I've never put a custom decal on a guitar or owned one with a non-original decal, but it really doesn't bother me what other people do with their guitars.

I just made up my own brand because it felt weird giving Fender credit for all the work I did or trying to make something look like something it isn't. :)

Guitar Fetish used to sell a Faker decal but it looks like they don't anymore. They have some kind of funny ones but most look geared more towards fake Gibsons.

If you’re like me and you want something specific that looks legit, but don’t have the graphic design skills to pull it off yourself, you could go down the route I did:

Pay a logo designer to modify the Fender logo with your wording in a way that still looks nice (for your non-commercial personal use only, of course!) I hired a freelancer on Envato Studio and was stoked with the results:

Get a custom decal printed with that design. I ordered from this store on Etsy and was stoked with those results too! Particularly the gold ink is beautiful 😍

A more expensive route for sure, but worth it to me since I’m fairly picky, and now I’ve got a logo to put on all my future builds!
