Fake rhythm circuit controls for Jazzmaster/Jaguar body without rhythm circuit cavity

Post by Ret Samzzaj » Wed Jul 14, 2021 3:14 am

I bought myself a Squier Contemporary Active Jazzmaster HH ST in a beautiful Graphite Metallic finish. This color is the reason I bought it, looks amazing with the matching headstock.

What I don't like is the color of the standard black pickguard, and more important, the "no upper controls" layout, too much flat plastic. This Jazzmaster doesn't have the rhythm circuit controls and cavity, and I don't plan to use my router to drill it out as I don't need the circuit.

So pure for the looks of this guitar, I had fake rhythm circuit controls 3D printed in black plastic. I will grind down some black pickguard screws, and glue them in where de screws for the brackets are on the pickguard.

Because of the routing of this body, standard JM pickup covers will not fit. Rather than using the router, I designed a JM pickup cover with a thin edge to keep it in place on the pickguard. The humbuckers will be fit under it.

I kind of laughed since i spent som effort to remove mine, and would like to find a better solution to blocking up holes in an aesthetically pleasing way (i have impermenently just used shielding tape on the reverse side) rather than nick my hand on a switch tip.... But to each their own for sure, it looks great.

I am a huge fan of the Fender big headstock neck, late 60s model that is (not the bullet truss rod one). Picked one up for 149 euro incl. shipping from the Göldo brand.

Fits the Squier Jazzmaster body perfectly.

They are on my Shapeways account, but I did not made them public. The knobs/rollers are solid, but the sheet is very thin. And although I marked them as "Print It Anyway" in my Shapeways order, Shapeways contacted me if I was really sure... a reason to not make the design public.

The 3D print out is fine though. The sheet is thick enough for support, and thin enough to go under the pickguard without a cavity underneath.

I can put the design up for sale if you want, but more like "at your own risk". "Print It Anyway" option should be ticked if you decide to order.

The design looks like this:

So 4 fake rollers an 4 slide switch knobs. You have to cut them out yourself with a pair of scissors.

Ordered them again, this time no questions from Shapeways, so I made the design "public" on Shapeways.

these look great! what I'd love instead, are inserts that fill the control area, flush with the top of the pickguard, so they just blank off the holes, instead of simulating controls.

These fakes cannot be ordered through Shapeways. As a "designer" of this model, I can mark the option "print anyway" in the order process, as a customer you cannot apparently. As some parts of the model are very thin, Shapeways will not print it for you. I can provide the stl file if you do not use it commercially.

I use fake strings and 3D printed a CD player inside the pickguard... I play mostly Hendricks and Clapton now.

I used to just be a rhythm player in a polka band.
