Jagumastocaster

Post by MC5tooge » Mon Jul 12, 2021 5:24 am

So, apart from the stereo switching which I'll fix next time I change strings - I think we're about done here...

Sounds (to my ears at least) just like a Jazzmaster apart from the tremelo, which is ever so slightly different.
3 switch panel controls each pickup on/off
2 1 meg vol pots and a 1 meg tone pot on "strat" board for the Jazzmaster pickups
1 1meg vol and a 100K tone on the jag panel for the lipstick. Might change to a 250K tone. Last switch is meant to do stereo switching.

What do you think?

Price came in at about a fifth of a Fender USA JagStrat (the main inspiration - but "that" scratchplate) or Jazz Strat.

Nice! Good to see another Stetsbar project - I'm using Stetsbars on my Jaywalker model. I find they sound similar to a JM vibrato in some ways (because the bridge moving along with the strings is a little like the high friction / rocking design), but obviously feel more direct and lack the depth of overtones you have in a JM or Jag.

I love how you've incorporated the Jag control plate into the Strat scheme, it really works! And what you've achieved is way better than that weird Strat / Jag hybrid design they did a while back where the guard doesn't fit the shape of the body!

I don't know whether you'd be into the look, but I found the Stetsbar a bit utilitarian in appearance particularly down towards the back end, so I incorporated a Teisco style tailpiece to go over the top. It required that I grind off the underside of the leading edge to fit (that would take the string anchors) but I prefer it covered up on mine.

Congrats on a sweet and unique build!

Yours is even sweeter. Sadly I don't have the metalworking skills to do the trem mod, but it sure looks sweet on yours.

I actually think the Stetsbar has a kind of mechanical Harley Davidson vibe to it which actually really works with your hotrodded style design! Is that a vintage Coronado neck? I didn't realise they were compatible with a Strat heel!

It's not a vintage neck. As far as I know, it's unused production stock from the Chinese manufacturer of the reissue.
I had to double check with a few searches before ordering that it would fit - and even then it was a gamble. But yes it fits perfectly.

Same ebay seller also had Starcaster necks but they apparently don't fit without modification due to the extra fret but I think they ran out now. They still have Coronado 2 necks available though.

The "motor vehicle" vibe with chrome and carbon was definitely the vibe I was trying to go for. Went with the carbon scratchplate as (despite the dust) it is a lot easier to cut to shape than "normal" scratchplate material and was also available in the exact same thickness as the metal plates.

Oh and here's a better pic....Image

Man it looks great! The knobs are perfect too, I think they really help in that it doesn't look unbalanced without a chrome knob / jack plate, as guitars with just the top one or two plates sometimes might.they really brighten up that area.

Same kind as Fender used on the Jazz Stratocaster. Found them very cheap in China - 3 Euros for 10 or something....

It looks like you're hosting them on Facebook and it's timing out - you could upload to Imgur for free and that will host forever :)

It ties my Jaguar's record of 8 slide switches :D

Maybe I need to go convert the roller pots to slide switches...

:D Your Jag still has the title - the two 2-way sliders on the bass horn should actually be bridged together to act as one switch on the Jaywalker!
