Primer down...

Image

Seeing as I'm not the greatest at spraying paint I'm just going to do the bare minimum of coats for a decent coverage. The idea is to distress the new finish a little bit so that it looks period-correct. This also means I don't have to overly worry about doing an utterly perfect job. I'll do the best I can, but I'm not going to stress it. The original parts would look strange against a beautiful spotless finish anyway

That's 3 coats of primer. Once that flash drys I'll start laying some blue. Probably only 3 or 4 coats of that as well. The clearcoat will probably be a lot thicker (aiming for 6-8 coats)

HAH!

It's not as bad as it looks. For a while a few years back I ran a skateboard company called "Eat Shit Club". I had to fold it due to life/money issues but I have a LOT of stickers still floating about.

The paint is going dry to the touch in super speed today for some reason. Must be the atmospherics.

Two coats of primer, three coats of colour. No runs amazingly. I'll let this rest a bit now

The light in the 'booth' isn't great so it looks a little dark:

Out in the (cloudy) light it looks a bit better though...

It's looking good.

Forgive me if I'm stating the obvious, but don't spray that can of WD40 anywhere near your Mess-stang body to avoid any contamination and a complete strip down to sort out. :squint:

Lol, of course. It's there (along with a can of carburettor cleaner) just to hold the sheeting tight hahaha

Unluckily for me, classic British weather meant we went from a good tepid temperature and dry to humid and raining like hell at about 9pm last night. This resulted in a slight bloom on the back. Hopefully that airs out.

The body has had as much paint and clearcoat as I planned now and will hang for 3-4 weeks now to harden. There's some weird spots here and there but those should cut back while I'm doing the wetsanding.

Here's how it stands. You can't see the yellowing from the tinted clear that much in this light but it's there...

Image

And this morning I laid the decal on so it's dry later and I can give a couple of hits of clear over the top...

Thanks! It's definitely a bit shoddy compared to many others' spray jobs but it'll suffice for my needs and desired end result.

I can be pretty industrious when I've got something in my head I wanna do. Also, I'm staring down the barrel of a few solid weeks of bookings at work so won't have a lot of free time available, so I thought I'd do this part now while I had the opportunity then at least I can step away while it all gasses out and hardens.

Nice work and great colour! That slightly smaller Mustang headstock was never my absolute favourite (preferred the enlarged one, exactly the opposite to my preferences in JM heads...), but it looks great in that colour. The transfer really pops out too, which sometimes gets lost on matching heads.

Keep us posted!

Been busy at it again. The lacquer was nice and dry this morning so started cutting it back a little, then got carried away.

The 'appropriate aging' - as I refuse to call it relicing when it's actually vintage and beat up - has started with aplomb. Just a few edge chips and dents replicated by me literally pretending to play it, accidentally knock things, pick it up put it down, miss the guitar stand etc.

Anyway, here's a terrible photo of how it stands as a quick and dirty bolt up...

Image

It'll get re-disassembled tomorrow and set aside to harden further before sticking it up into the loft/attic for some cold/hot/cold/hot action to check the finish.

I've decided to wire this one up with just one switch: classic bridge/both/neck with no phase cancellation (I never use it)

Will be using this Shadoweclipse13 diagram (minus the killswitch)
