Wow. That's a really great job, you should be proud. Not an easy finish to pull off.

Re: MIM Player refinish
Thanks for the kind words everyone.
I had a few problems with my main spray gun while doing the clear coats: It started splitting beige lumps of 'something' which dried hard. Luckily I always start on the back and I stopped spraying straight away. I wet sanded them off, but the gun is kaput (it was a cheap £25 top filling one I got off Amazon; it's lasted for two necks and one and half bodies, so I guess it was still cheaper than rattle cans and a better finish ). I have a spare touch up gun for cars, which is probably fine for guitars anyway, so I finished the clear using that. I probably should have made more adjustments (possibly gun air pressure) because I got more 'dry spray' on the edges when spraying the front/back than I did with the other gun.
This poor photo shows how the edge looked after drying:
I went round the edges with P1000 then P2000 and gave it a light buff with my DA polisher. Looks like it'll come up fine:
I'll let it harden a bit longer before buffing the front and back, but this nitro hardens pretty quickly so I can usually buff within a week of spraying without suffering 'sinking'. I used the same clear coat nitro on my Tele and Strat necks and buffed them less than a week after spraying and they still look great...I'm too impatient to wait for a month or more.
Not a bad shine from the gun on the front, so I hope I'll only need to buff and not wet sand first. Might need to wet sand the back as it's a little rougher, but plenty of clear coats to sand back without worrying about breaking through...it'll soon get marks on the back anyway I guess, but I try to keep them nice.
I've got a Marshall SC20 combo coming tomorrow, so that will distract me from doing any more buffing before I should.

Gave it a bit of a buff today and placed the 'guard and bridge on the body for a photo. Really like how it's looking, but will leave it a bit longer before giving the front a final buff before re-assembling it.

My heart skips a beat when I see the word "re-finish" in the title but you have nailed it!

I got the second coat of conductive paint on this evening, another quick buff and then left it hanging up in the garage to help it harden (we're having really hot weather here lately).
It's just begging me to put it on and play.

Only indoor photos for now as the weather has turned wet tonight. Had a quick play to check it all out after I had to refit a wire I'd managed to pull off when refitting it all, but it's all good.
And another:
Hope you like.

Re: MIM Player refinish
that is insanely good MrJagsquire! Color looks on point.
What type of gold did you use? did you mix it yourself from the bronze powder or was it a premixed? Metallics orientation looks good and uniform. I'm a little scared of getting dark spots from the dry spray. The gold basecoat looked like it set up perfectly for the candy coat.

Re: MIM Player refinish
Thanks Snarf. I used 'Gibson Gold Top Gold' from North West Guitars. It's a UK based shop that sells a selection of nitro paint for spray guns (and aerosols). I don't think there is any bronze in it though, just a standard basic gold colour. I just sprayed it from a slightly further distance to usual to give a wider spray pattern with less chance of 'stripes'. I had some practice a lot of years ago spraying a friend's car: It was a gold Vauxhall and I kept getting like 'tiger stripes' in the finish, until I worked out that spraying a bit further back and more 'dusting' it on.

Inspring thread my jagsquire
Feeling more confident about trying a candy finish now, Handy tip about the bass coat spraying distance.
Had good results with north west guitars nitro before, Quality stuff.
