Super Sonic with Jag/Jazz Vibrato - Left-Handed

Post by Paul_Valentine » Wed Apr 21, 2021 1:52 pm

Hi, first time posting here. Long time watching, reading and learning. I even already built parts Jag, packed with knowledge from this forum 5 years ago.

Now, I’m building Super Sonic and I thought to myself it would be cool to show my progress. I have also few questions. But let me introduce project first.

Image

Despite it is not an issue to convert right handed Super Sonic to decent lefty guitar I decided to make proper reverse one. I always liked the SS and other reversed looking guitars like Firebird or Yamaha SGV300. Another inspiration were Deimel Guitars which are smaller lightweight offset body guitars with all that quirks connected with offsets. I basically threw together all kind of things I like about offsets in one guitar.

Image

BODY
Lefty Super Sonic Swamp Ash body from Mcguyver Guitar Co.

NECK
Jaguar/Mustang Neck from Musikraft. It’s right handed but I asked them to put side markers to other side. This makes it lefty with reversed headstock neck.
Neck Material Maple
Neck Finish Thin Nitro
Neck Shape V 84 90 (Clapton)
Scale Length 24" (610 mm)
Fingerboard Material Indian Rosewood
Fingerboard Radius 9.5" (241 mm)
Number of Frets 22
Frets 6105 Nickel Silver (Medium)
Nut Material TUSQ
Nut Width 1-5/8" (41.3mm)
Truss Rod Dual Acting w/ 4mm Hex Adjust @ Head

HARDWARE
AmPro II Bridge with 52mm spacing
Vibrato with Locking button from Japanese Jazzmaster
Locking Tuning Machines
4-Bolt Asymmetrical Neck Plate

ELECTRONICS
Bridge Pickup RM Pickups - Jaguar Bridge
Neck Pickup RM Pickups - Jazzmaster Neck
Behind the Bridge Pickup Duncan Designed JG-101B
Controls
Volume - Burns 1Meg with push/pull for switching on/off behind the bridge pickup
Tone - Fender TBX Tone Control - wired as dual gang. One side for 250kohm and second 1Meg.
Toggle switch - pickup selector
Slide switch - Series/parallel switch
Slide switch - on/off for piezo disk
Killswitch

I will try to paint it with Kustom Canz Base Pearlz - Purple Surfer which is pearl lavender/lilac/pastel violet colour

First question is regarding the pickup cavities. The cavity for the bridge pickup isn't routed for the Jag pickup. I will route swimming pool instead of separate cavities for each pickup. Partially to lighten body even more. The part under the Jag pickup has to be deeper than for Jazzmaster pickup, I guess. So, I would like to know how deep cavity for Jag pickup suppose to be?

I also design the pickguard now. Only thing remains is placement of bridge pickup to finish it. I need a reference. What's the distance between bridge and bridge pickup on Jaguar?

My parts Jaguar has humbuckers in it. So, I can't measure this dimension myself because it does not have to be correct on mine. If anyone can provide me with those measures I will be grateful.

Welcome onboard, Paul. :)
Nice project you've got there, I'm gonna follow it for sure.
(Pictures are not showing though.)

For what concerns the depth of the Jaguar pickup route, I've got these measurements:
Vintage Jaguar : 3/8" ( .375”) --> 9.5249 mm;
MIJ Jaguar : 0.59” --> 14.98 mm.

For what concerns the bridge pickup placement this might help:

I was really busy last few months. So, whenever I had a time I rather worked on the actual built than posting the progres. However, here are pics of what I done so far.

Drilling

Neck/test fitting

Additional routing and carving... I was decided to DIY these steps but eventually left it to skilled person. There is swimming pool now. Cavity for btb pickup is routed for jag pickup (how was originally intended). Control cavity for pots was deepened to fit push/pull pot and stacked pot. There ware carved arm, rib cage contours and rounded neck heel.

Finally after some hole filling and sending...

I encountered some issues during finishing. The first one is little bit unusual, I guess.

Few places are lighter then rest of the back of the body. It is where are really deep cavities. The body is thin and deep cavities left only around 3 mm of wood between bottom of the cavity and back of the body.

I can only think of one reason why this occurred. Could it be those spots dried and cured faster than rest?

Should I simply try to re-spray that again once it is cured? If not is there something to do to fix it? Or how not to run in to the same issue again?

This sounds like a great project from a fellow lefty!

Unfortunately i can’t see your pictures - maybe you need a different way to upload them?

Cheers.

Still waiting for pickguard. Hopefully, it is finished and packed to be sent now.

It finally comes together. The colour is really hard to capture right on camera.
