Custom 34" 4-string Fender Bass VI project

Post by evanforbass » Fri Apr 02, 2021 2:05 pm

Hey there. Thought I'd share about this journey I'm on to build a 34" 4-string Bass VI. It all started with me wanting to mess around with some of the Wide Range Humbuckers from the 70s telecaster basses, basically putting an additional one in the middle position--basically a Rick pickup config as far as location. Body options were limited for such a venture, and would require custom routing, and at the end of the day, i do vacillate on whether or not I love the tele bass aesthetic.

Then I see a post in local facebook musicians group- a local one-woman shop luthier who has done a handful of weird custom builds on top of normal luthiery work. So we started scheming and here we are.
I snagged an 2015 American Standard P neck and she's currently shaping the body

Sounds like an interesting project, but not much like a VI....i presume you mean the body will be VI shaped?

Photos would be cool - hope you can sort it out.

Yer gonna have to pay yr dues like the rest of us and read this thread: viewtopic.php?f=5&t=202

You need to post your images to an image hosting site like flickr, then find the url for just the image alone, not the image in a viewer. Paste the url in your message. Then you put the img tags around it by selecting the url and hitting the “picture” button above the message field.

For instance, https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Super_F ... perfly.jpg won’t work, because that’s the image viewer page on the wikipedia entry for Super Fly. You just end up with the “image fail” box:
Image

But if you go to the actual image’s actual-factual location, https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/ ... perfly.jpg, and put the image tags on THAT:

Keep trying til you get it, because lots of folks here want to see a Bass IV.

Looking forward to see some pics.
I find Imgur to be a decent "host" for uploading pictures on this board.

Hey y'all. Been a while, took a few months to get these awesome pickups from Jaime at Creamery. I am awaiting the custom pickguard then should be ready to assemble and wire. Thanks for the help on pics!

Ya I still haven't figured out what to call this thing. Bass IV? It's kind of a bass jazzblaster but it's not a jazzmaster body?

Love the idea.

Gets close to a Jazz Bass without a second horn, so probably should have 'Jazz' in the title. JazzBASSTER IV (Because also needs a roman numeral string designation.)

as someone who loves the sound of those WRHB bass pickups, i'm keeping an eye on this. just promise me if you do a demo, you'll play some lungfish on it. to me that's peak WRHB on a bass.

Ya thanks! I’m really excited not just about the “mudbucker” spot, but also the middle spot, which will be in the same location as a Rick bridge pup. I’m not too keen on most bridge pickups in J-ish territory (I mainly play P bass) so I’m hopeful this will be more usable for me, with some beef in the WRHB

Oh man, that bass WRHB in the link sounds really good Sean. Very growly. Almost like a 4003 Ric, but fatter...
