Red Tort Discontinued at WD, etc.
There are a couple posts going around Facebook that the supplier for WD Music's #05R Tort is no longer producing it and WD will no longer be offering it.
Explains why I've been sitting on a restock that never seemed to be coming

That sucks. You know there’s always Spitfire.
But, I really have to give props to forum member Paolo_ray who started his own tort business called Lavaguards. They’re still expensive, but at the moment are still a bit cheaper than spitfire.

I think the guard I ordered from Pickguardian was the same tort as WD. I would check to see if he can still make anything.

I got a shipment of WD celluloid tort that arrived with such a convex warp that I had to send it back. Couldn't use it.
They're re-working their product line and either they are dropping some things that haven't been good sellers, or that they think may be unavailable for some time.

Does lavaguards have a website? Or are they only on Instagram and Facebook?

The tort that matches the WD Tort is still listed on the Pickguardian website as in stock.Pepe Silvia wrote: ↑Wed Mar 17, 2021 3:59 amI think the guard I ordered from Pickguardian was the same tort as WD. I would check to see if he can still make anything.

I will buy a Spitfire one of these days. I really liked the WD red tort for the mid-tier price point, hopefully they will come up with something.Unicorn Warrior wrote: ↑Wed Mar 17, 2021 3:29 amThat sucks. You know there’s always Spitfire.

Lavaguards is intriguing though. Just checked them out. I never heard of them. Thanks for sharing.

I’m not 100% certain.
Here’s the link to my build. You can see the Lavaguard on pages 3 and 4. Should be installed soon

I think with tort there's no in between. Its either good or it's crap. The middle priced ones posted here over the years here don't really look any better than the cheap ones.
Now, there are cheap ones that look okay for what they are, but those mid priced ones dont really look any better. So i just don't think is worth it.
Go big or go home.

Agreed. I remember I had a WD tort guard years ago on my JM that I preferred to the standard weirdly dark Fender Japan stuff. But I really only liked it better because it was a more jolly red, more like tomato sauce and less like p00p and dried up blood with bits of vomit mixed in. Still, neither tort had any kind of “depth” to them, if that makes any sense?

Yeah, now that you mention it I feel the same way. I think it is just the color options that I liked more than the tort itself.Sauerkraut wrote: ↑Thu Mar 18, 2021 12:25 amAgreed.
