I want to play a game.... (who doesn't like a contest?)

Post by AcrylicSuperman » Tue Mar 02, 2021 12:25 pm

2020 was an incredibly rough year for many of us. Some of us lost our jobs and even worse, loved ones. We can only hope 2021 will be a better year.

As a survivor of Covid 19, seeing your builds and projects inspired me when I was hospitalized. I convinced myself that if I survived, I would create music again, something I haven't done in over a decade. I dusted off some old pedals and just bought my first offset: a Squier Affinity Jazzmaster HH.

For having inspired me, I want to inspire you to complete a project. I have a $25 gift card code to 920D Custom that is valid toward any of their wiring harnesses, control plates or loaded pickguards, and I'm willing to pass it on to one of you to help make your project come to life.

Here is how you enter: tell me, if money was no object and you could have any piece of gear, existing or custom, what would it be and why? Answers can be as long or as short as you want. If you complete that task, your name will be in a random draw.

I'll leave this open until March 10, 2021, 11:59 PST. Good luck to all.

I don't need the card, because this year was pretty productive in terms of guitar projects, but I certainly do want to say that this is a kind offer and I'm glad you are healed up.
Back in those days, everyone knew that if you were talking about Destiny's Child, you were talking about Beyonce, LaTavia, LeToya, and Larry.

Thank you. And no rush, you have plenty of time.

Thank you. I'm happy to still be here. It's a terrible virus when it hits hard. Wouldn't wish it on my own worst enemy.

920d does excellent work. Because I just purchased a wiring kit from them, I do not need the card.

However, dream piece of gear is a vintage original finish sparkle JM or a nice ol’ sunburst JM pre-65.

I'm doing alright for parts money, so I'd rather leave it to someone who'd make good use of it.

Dream gear is an amp based on the old Gallien-Krueger 250RL -- basically the tone all over Iron Maiden's Somewhere in Time and Seventh Son of a Seventh Son. 4 channels (clean, crunchy, and 2 heavy channels) with independent compression and gain controls (the originals just had switches for "on" or "off"), independent 4-band active EQ, and a master volume. Instead of the stereo reverb and chorus, give me one effects loop before the preamp for an OD, and three stereo loops before the power amp for modulation, delay, and reverb. 150W-a-side stereo, 300W mono bridged, and MIDI so I can use something like a Morningstar MC8 to get easy access to the four channels and the loops.

It's a lot of stuff, but I pretty much would never need another amp again -- the originals are super flexible, and this would be even more so with the extra channels, routing options, independent EQ, and gain knobs instead of switches.

It sounds like cheating or some kind of lazy cop-out, but my dream is a large Eurorack system with a ton of different modules...which is sort of what I have, but at the same time what I'll never have. To be more specific, I'd add more modules that that emphasize harmonics, probability, "unusual" type of filters (not hp/lp/bp, but stuff like formant and comb filters), and lots of stuff for sampling and audio mangling, and a million different ways to actively control, i.e. ribbon controller, theramin, optical sensors, bio sensors, etc. I've definitely got way more than I should at this stage, because I sold nearly all my gear and then added more debt than I've ever incurred for gear...got laid off during Covid and nihlism took over my spending habits when I returned to work.

If I were getting a single piece of gear that wasn't modular or a customized configuration of fancy parts made to spec, I'd want this thing that I think I saw on OSG first:

Not at all. Your choice was interesting. But that's why I chose the word gear. It can be anything. A pickup, a guitar, a drum kit, a microphone. Anything. Your first choice definitely counts. :)

Gosh, honestly, this was pretty hard, but as I sat here thinking about it, there were two guitars I just couldn't cross off the list: a '61 Gibson Les Paul Custom in white, just like Mary Ford used to play, and a '56 Gretsch White Penguin. The White Falcon usually gets all the love, but I'm just not a hollow body guy. A Duo Jet with the same style appointments? Forget it. Forced to pick one, it'd be the White Penguin.

Congratulations on your recovery. I think this prize might be just the kind of enabling I don't need right now. I juuuust bought a wiring harness for my current project. :fp:

I suppose I wish I could go back in time and magically have the money for the 58 or 59 gold guard Jazzmaster that belonged to Tom Verlaine that sold on ebay circa 2000.

Very cool thing to do! 8) Recently purchased a wiring hardware from 920D and it was ace.

The piece of gear? Too many! But since I need to name one, I’d take that PRS Private stock that Paul David’s recently got, or at least used in a recent video - that thing is a work of art!

Contest is officially closed. Thanks to all who entered.

Before I announce the winner, picked by random draw, if I could have any piece of gear, it would be a 1954 blackguard telecaster. Almost bought one, closet clean for $20k once but I ultimately walked away. I just couldn't bring myself to do it.

And now, the moment you've been waiting for. Selected by random draw, the winner is...

@raindog13

Congrats to you, raindog13! You'll be recieving a PM shortly. To everyone else, I'm looking forward to seeing all of your future builds and projects!
