This is looking amazing. Both the burst and the neck. Can't wait to see this one assembled.

Thanks!!! :)
I'm pretty stoked how it came out...

And I couldn't ressist taking these;

I like how the black guard ties the thing together. Might have to order some white witch hat's as I think they will look in place.
But I think it has the 70's vibe I was going for.
It's funny how difficult a 3 TSB is to photograph. The red can be very vibrant in some pics and washed out in others.
In reality the red is somewhere in between.

Wow, great job! Did you apply clear coats in between the coloured coats?

I didn't apply any clear coats so far. I had been watching some You Tube clips from the Fender Custom Shop? and how they apply these finishes and they just paint the 3 colours in one run. So this is what I did. I didn't even wait for any of the paint to dry. Just wet coat after wet coat.
I only used laquer based paints that were thinned with the same thinner as this is key. Also since I used an airbrush instead of a paint gun, my paintlayers were much thinner and dried quicker. I just gradually builded up the layers. I guess the layers just kind of melt into eachoter as they dry.

I prepared all my paint up front and it took about an hour to apply the 3 TSB. (I had to keep an I-pad within reach with some pictures of vintage 3 TSB Jazzmasters to regulary check if I was still on track when spraying the red and black bands ;D....
In between colours, I just cleaned the airbrushes with the the same thinner I used for the paint.
I have to add that I have been an avid plastic model builder in my teens and twenties, so I'm used to work with these airbrushes (and therefore still have all the materials within hands reach, didn't turn out to be such a waste of time after all :D ;D )

Thanks for your detailed answer! I did my last sunburst finish over 10 years ago.
I sprayed clear coats in between because I red about it somewhere along the way...

Re: 70's style Jazzmaster on a budget - AKA the Chinamaster - Update 04/03- decal made!!!

Post by ohm-men » Fri Apr 02, 2021 10:21 pm

Thanks Felipe!

I clearcoated the body and it will need to dry for a few days until I can work on it again.
In the meantime I ordered some parts and I made my custom decal for the headstock, inspired by the big block Fender 70's decal.

The pic of the headstock got a bit overlighted, it's not a bleak as it apears.
Fender dropped the " Original Contour Body" decal in the late 70's and started adding serlial no's. Although the pre '77 Jazzmasters still had it apperently...

Re: 70's style Jazzmaster on a budget - AKA the Chinamaster - Update 04/06- Dilema...

Post by ohm-men » Tue Apr 06, 2021 1:00 am

Today I received the parts that I ordered to complete this Jazzmaster.
It's the first time (for me at least) to get hold of a set of white witch hat knobs. These are larger then I expected, but ok for me.

Now for the dilema...

Image

The original maple neck jazzmaster was made in late 60's/early 70's and came with a tort guard.
Although, I went with a black guard, but I made a tort guard from some tort I found in my parts bin. Too small for a Jm guard, but enough to make one.

Here we are;
First, the 3 ply black guard.

Image

Then my DIY tort guard, redisch of colour, not to bad for a late 60's/early 70's representation.
Please mind it's not finished yet as I still have to do some work on this guard.
I'm confident I can make the jack piece fit (like I said, tort wat to small for a Jm guard, so I worked my way arround this)

Image

So what do you think. Black or Tort... (please mind there is still protective film on both guards, so they apear not as glossy as they are in real life)
I'm leaning toward the black guard as I like the contrast better. Perhaps the red tort seams a bit out of place, but I should finish it first, correct bevel and add the parts to get a better idea...

I got some time to think about this as well, as I clear coated the body last week and it's now ready for some wet sanding and polishing :)

The answer is always to put black on a sunburst.
This is an excellent rectangle

I vote black too, but I really don't like tort on sunburst (gives me a 70s brown on red wallpaper vibe)

Black. You’ve nailed the 70s Jazzmaster aesthetic, black guard tops it off perfectly.

That particular tort is not a good color for sunburst , the black ties it together. Great job!

Most definitely blackguard.
It enhances both the burst and the shade of the maple neck.

Very cool project you've got there.
