Brandonwound pickups?

Post by HarlowTheFish » Fri Jan 29, 2021 9:25 pm

I've been looking for a set of noiseless JM pickups for a build for a while, and much as I appreciate the work that goes into the Fralin/Kinman/Novak stuff, ~$400 is a lot of cash -- though, if those were my options I'd be happy to pony up the cash.

Then I ran into the Brandonwound pickup page, where a set of his noiseless JM pickups is $230 and honestly I dig the tones I've heard out of them way more than the F/K/N ones I've heard -- it's a limited sample size, only two demos, but they sound really good to my ears. I'm no JM tone connoisseur or anything, but they have that snappy percussive quality and kinda dry openness under drive that drew me to getting a JM set rather than P90s for this build, so first impressions are very good.

I'm curious if any of y'all have any experience -- either with these or with any of his other stuff. He's gotten plenty of love for his PAF and T-Tops on other forums, so I'm not sketched out by the prospect of buying from him or anything, just curious if anybody here's got any kind words to add or any thoughts in general.

I'm "researching" pickups too and have checked out the same demos. To me these sound fine in their own way, but don't particularly sound like Jazzmaster pickups. No personal experience though.

I’m suspicious of any product that the manufacturer refuses to tell me about the construction. That was a total no go for me - especially from a new unknown entity. I ordered Novak’s instead.

I can’t comment on his noiseless pickups but can vouch for Brandonwound being of good quality overall. A few years ago i tried a strat set and some wide range humbuckers. Both sets were nice, although i ultimately ended up replacing them with other brands.

I send all my rewinds to Jared. He’s meticulous and his product and service is excellent. I’ve been meaning to check out his T-tops.

I’ve had his t-tops and liked them a lot. They sounded very close to some original t-tops that I owned at the time

Bah look at you guys being safe and not jumping on random weird pickup sets :P

Fuck it, these are way cheaper than anything else and I think they sound fine on the tube. I'll take one for the team and pick some up for this build sometime in the next couple of months, just need some more structurally critical parts before I get to these -- the pickups will blow my monthly parts budget pretty much by themselves, so I'm gonna get some tuners, a nut, and some screws first.

If I don't like them, honestly no huge loss, I'll save them for something else and hop on some Fralins or Kinmans later.

They sound darn good on his demos. How does he get the noiseless factor in there? Any ideas on design? What body are you going to use? Rosser ash semi-hollow might be a goodun.. That way you can take two for the Team and let me know how it sounds!!

I'm pretty impressed too. The vibe I get is kinda SD Antiquity I up through the mids, then more Ant II-y from the mids up, which sounds pretty good to me. As far as the construction, it's either a stack or a sidewinder -- there's only so many ways you can skin a noiseless cat, despite what Kinman will tell you (not knocking the work and I respect the hustle, but his website gives me serious Ed Roman vibes) and I've spent enough time with PAF-footprint humbuckers to tell you there's very little chance that's what he went with. He says they're sealed shut, so while I'm happy to take a look when I get them in, I'm not taking a knife to them unless they suck and I need to go with Fralins or something else.

Happy to do a Rosser body eventually, but this one's already getting some paint on it ;D
I'm doing a 25.5" lightweight alder Mustang body, routed for a JM/S/JM setup and JM trem, with a 5-way on the lower horn like the Fender Sixty-Six. JMs are a bit big for me (I'm only 5'8"), and I like the way the Mustang hangs a bit more -- I'm coming from an RG and a couple of pretty small headlesses before getting my first Mustang, so I'm pretty happy with it being more compact.

If they sound that good on You-tube I bet they will shine once you get them in your Build! Looking forward to seeing it as it comes together. I have never held a Fender Mustang. Its funny how you can spend your whole life and just not get to try out very many Brands and models of different guitars. I am making up for lost time stuck around the Place with Grams safety in mind and it has let me build and learn a bunch. Would enjoy a trip to a Guitar Show or Nashville to check out some shops this Summer.

I tried his P90 Jazzmaster set. I liked them, but sold them because I hadn't figured out shimming and the neck pickup was too close to the strings... :fp: I figured that out later and would have kept them. Oh well. :D

I haven't tried them, (I have a set of Fralins that are awesome), but my neighborhood luthier, Chris @ DiPinto Guitars, swears by him and sends his pickups to him for rewinds. I plan on sending a few pickups his way in the not so distant future.

Have you grabbed a set yet? I’m curious to read your review.
