Coronamaster - FINISHED - pg 4

So this is happening.

:w00t:

I'd been waiting for a black Modern Player Coro to come along, for a while now. This one popped up at an incredible price and it seemed the stars aligned for this project. So I'm going for it and I couldn't be more excited! When it's finished, the only thing original to this guitar will be the wood.

Parts are:
CBS-style pickupwiz pickups (with a special surprise, if I can get it working right)
1 meg pots (vol/tone only) (the other two will be show knobs, hahaha)
a set of vintage Coro knobs
70s F tuners with plastic buttons
matched headstock with reversed F logo
Mustang bridge
AVRI Trem
"F" neck plate
and a custom, cream pickguard
new bone nut

Once all the parts are here and the headstock is matched, I'll send it off to be routed.

That's going to look fantastic. The small fidelitrons look out of place on that big body. I never pictured one with JM pickups but that looks perfect! And the covers go really well with the binding on the f holes and neck...that's going to look super sharp!

Beautiful. Looking forward to this! :-* JM pickups look grrrrrreat on the body. Really nice proportions. Love how the covers complement the binding. Doesn't seem to need a pickguard in my mind but curious how it will look.

I like the Coronado design. Looking forward to seeing what yours will look like when done.

This is going to be awesome! I wish Fender or Squier would put out something like this.

Thanks! I sure hope it turns out. I've been dreaming of this for a while now. I have a couple of options for the routing work - I want to make sure it gets done right. One thing I noticed, is that Fender routed a huuuuuge angle in to the neck pocket. No doubt, trying to emulate other set-neck hollow/semi-hollows and to compensate for break-angle and whatnot...

I seem to be under the impression that vintage Coros had a neck pocket similar to a standard Jazzmaster route. I'm thinking about getting this one somewhat flattened out. When I was mocking it up last night, it seemed REALLY steep. The neck ramps right out of the body, which sets the pickups quite high (the bridge, especially), as well as the bridge itself. Aesthetically, I'm not a huge fan of that thought - nor, do I think it'll really need that. I don't think it'll ever be strung with anything lower than 12s, so it should be fine...?

Hivemind? Thoughts on the neck pocket thing?

My lipstick JM project guitar has an angled neck pocket that results in the bridge being pretty high. If I was using a rocking bridge and not a Mastery it would be a problem I think.

Could you reverse shim it if needed? I guess I’d be a little worried about getting a re-routed neck pocket square to the bridge, but I suppose it would just take some creativity with the routing template.

I'd want to know why Fender decided to that in the first place? You're probably right, they probably wanted to make the tension similar to a more typical semi-hollow.

But that said, I think you're right to flatten it out. Just make sure reducing the wood in the pocket won't make it toooo shallow.

Didn't the MP Coronado have a TOM and harp tailpiece? You need an angled neck pocket to get sufficient break angle for that bridge to work. That would be why it's angled like that.

I wondered about the reverse-shim as a backup, backup plan. I don't think I'd ever feel "resolved" with that though. The risk of disaster in re-routing the pocket does worry me.

I've played vintage Coros before - and I swear, they originally did them flat - and I don't recall it being an issue. Again, a JM/Mustang-like bridge on those, as opposed to a TOM style. I do hope I can find someone with the nerve and skill to pull this off, hahaha

They did, yes. Which is my thinking as well, about the angle. But if it gets flattened-out (I'll keep a bit of angle, if I can) and I go with a mustang bridge and heavy strings, I should be okay. I hope.

Well. If I can find someone willing to try and pull it off.. I'm going all-in - so we're about to find out.

Not weird to want to bring that down a bit, right? :derp:
