Help needed - Jazzmaster build with triple Kay Kleenex

Post by Teebz999 » Wed Dec 07, 2022 4:28 pm

Hi Forum!

My latest build involves a Jazzmaster body with 1" deep swimming pool route - coming in a few weeks - finished in sonic blue.

Now, I removed the metal plate on the back with the little ears that would have fixed this pickup to an archtop - the little ears were too wide for a bridge pickup. Turns out the two small screws that held it in place could possibly be replace by some long wood screws to screw the pickups directly to the body with some foam for leveling - just like a soapbar P-90. This is my intention.

Now, these screws are very small. The original machine screw is right between a #2 and #3. I have not found any long #2 wood screws (I would need a good 1.5" to 2" length). Anyone know where I might source these screws ? Or some #2 x 2" machine screws ? I could glue a nut to the body ? Any help would be appreciated.

I've never used them in a guitar context, but a few people around here use threaded inserts for necks and pickups. If you need a #2 screw, I would get a #2 machine screw threaded insert for the body, and then you can get whatever length #2 machine screw you need for the pickup mounting.

Great idea, I'll look for some #2 threaded inserts. Maybe even an M2 might work as the hole is a tad larger than 2mm.

Any source for long (2" ??) #2 machine screws ?

I've gotten m2 (2.00 mm, close to what you were measuring I gather?) and m2.5 threaded inserts and screws in different lengths from aliexpress. Takes a while to arrive, but they're pretty cheap and you can get a lot of different lengths. I believe I have some that are 40mm long, or at least 35mm, unfortunately they're not immediately at hand to check.
