Where Can I Find this Pickguard Material?

Post by Unicorn Warrior » Fri May 20, 2022 9:51 pm

Gretsch calls this material a Satin Flame in their drum wraps. Can’t really find anything when I search for that on guitar pick-guards though.

Would like to source some for a pickguard idea in the future. Not really wanting to go the DIY route, but it appears I may have to. I could obviously just buy the wrap and slap it on a pg, but wondered if there was a harder/plastic version that would stand up to the job better. See the danelectro below

The Danos have a thin layer of this stuff underneath a clear plastic guard. That would be the way to go I think.

Woohoo!
Someone with the same weird ideas as me! :w00t:

The Drum-wrap way seems very unnecessary expensive. But I also just got to this point - getting to know the name but no details on the material itself. As a former owner of a Baritone I can confirm the sheet plus clear guard - but I can‘t remember if the black line is on the clear guard or on the sheet.

Planned on using it either on a Jag or the still only in my head existing idea of a Spectrum/Rickenbacker.

PS: the clear sheet above could be useful to give extra dimensions for a Tort sheet! :)

Warrior,

Did one of these awhile back for an orphaned Jag project.

Two pieces though.

0.10" Extruded Plexiglass Acrylic sheet from ePlastics
0.015" Rowlux Illusion Film from ePlastics - Moire Opaque Metalized Chrome

Google Rowlux Illusion Film - decent amount of color choices in the lineup.

Couple of original Dano Coral Hornet guards and the Jag version.

Good luck

That looks sick.

There are some pretty nice acrylic sheets on that website too

I think the company that makes Gretsch drum wraps is called "Delmar"
I tried sourcing some pink champagne sparkle wrap for a Billy Bo build but every person that had some wanted stupid money for a sheet.

As mentioned, those old (and new) Danelectro guards are clear plexi with a sheet of lenticular surfaced plastic sheet underneath. The lenticular plastic (Rowlux is one brand name for it) has been used for drumwrap but I don't think Delmar has ever made a version of it.
I've bought Rowlux sheets from Canal Plastics:

If you're doing a pickguard, you'll want the white backed sheet, not translucent.

Hey Repo,

Thanks for the compliment.

I think I still have the pickguard if anyone needs it. It was a Paul Rhoney/Faction Template.

I also still have the Rowlux if anyone needs a sample.

Regards,

Mark

Hey Mark!
Do you mean the Jaguar guard or the Dano?

Best, Markus

It took me forever to get this guitar through its various stage… for now I‘m pretty happy.

…meet: „Estrella Destruida“

Sadly the Lipsticks I bought on Reverb never arrived - but Jag pickups are fun too
Upper plate does nothing so far… also the „wheels“ are fake. Looking forward to get a Johnny Marr Plate.
Not a 100% sold on the series wiring…might test some (semi-) out of phase wiring soon… and could easily be that I replace the upper plate with a bigger (maybe even full) pickguard in that spacey look…

Thanks again, Mark!
