re-soldering a pickup lead
doing some rewiring on my jazzmaster, which has involved undoing a lot of shit wiring i did in 2016 or so (massive face palm). in the process, the wires coming from the hot lead on my bridge pickup have frayed, and it’s now only hanging on by a strand or two...
i’ve tried fixing pickup leads before, a long time ago on some cheap strat pickups, and couldn’t get it right. so thought i’d ask for tips before i dive in and fuck this one up.
in case it matters, i should mention that the only new wire i have is solid-core and plastic coated. i have a bunch of cloth wire i just pulled out of the guitar now though too, and some of it is long enough to salvage if i need to (the pickups have cloth wire).
thanks

if it's standard jazzmaster pickups, it's not hard
offset guitars resident bass player.

Re: re-soldering a pickup lead
so, just don’t fuck it up?
i assume the trick is just to make sure the copper strand stays in place and doesn’t break.

Re: re-soldering a pickup lead
Carefull to no overheat the coil wire ,to do this first i put sôme solder on the pickup wire to desolder more easy (fresch solder help desoldering often) after use a pumps to otate solder , put the new wire in thé eyelet and carefully resold it ,not to hot to avoid burning coil wire
By thé time i know thé good température for coil wire ,less hot than other soldering by 20% i think it is a little longer to mâke it but avoid coil wire burning ( too hot and it is instantané and too late)

Re: re-soldering a pickup lead
Does the lead need resoldered where it attaches to the pick up itself or to the pots?

Re: re-soldering a pickup lead
on the actual pickup–i know how wire a guitar, generally, just don't always have great luck with delicate stuff like this.
-
anyway, it worked, but the pickup is maybe quieter than it was. i don't use the bridge pickup on it's own much, so i can't really tell. i have to get back in the guitar to do some other troubleshooting on what i changed, so i'll give it a multimeter test and see if it still matches the original read.

Hey, no insults intended, you never know who's on the other end, poking around in a guitar! Better to ask than not assume.noisepunk wrote: ↑Thu Jan 20, 2022 2:44 pmon the actual pickup–i know how wire a guitar, generally, just don't always have great luck with delicate stuff like this.
