Troy Van Leeuwen JM Oxblood owners: opinions needed
Hey fam,
I've been lusting after a TVL JM for a while but can't quite vibe with some of the specs so I thought I'd try and assemble my own. I've never seen one in person but I have gathered quite a bit of reference images in hopes of concocting a batch oxblood paint I can mix myself.
I've got some questions about the oxblood paint used. In some light it looks near black, but in others, it's a deep maroon. In close up reference pics, it looks like there's pearl or metallic (candy as well?) and not a straight up solid color. I know Fender CS painter Jay Nelson's Instagram shows him painting a strat in oxblood: https://www.instagram.com/p/CIWAtX1Jv4u/ All I can gather is theirs is nitro, has mica pearl in it and is 110% dope.
I'm planning to use Createx Wicked Colors & water based Varathane Ultimate as I've done on previous projects. I stumbled on a video that looks to have a recipe for something close to Oxblood (as far as I can tell).
TVL JM owners, how close does the sample at 9 mins in look to oxblood in this video? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3NRz2aK ... x=3&t=199s
Thanks!!

It's impossible to tell from that video, it all depends on how bright that light is. The colour in person just looked to me like a really dark incarnation of candy apple red. Similar depth and metallic reflections, though I don't know for certain whether it was a two-layer finish like CAR itself.

^ what he said.
I have an Oxblood Texas Toast XII that I asked to be finished in the TVL color- looks to me like just a very deep, dark CAR. Lovely metal flake, but no pearl in it.
**Edited to hide my ignorance on CAR finishes**

I would try house of kolor brandywine. You could spray it over a dark metallic base and it would look pretty close. Maybe even better than the custom shop finish.

Closing the loop on this in case any one searches this up in the future. I finished up my project recently and still not having seen an actual TVL JM in real life, I think this is as close as I can get. I'm just happy its done

Looks great! Crazy how many coats of paint the original had, and that it's under$1500!
I'm considering oxblood or a very dark metallic green for my Marauder build.

Oh crap... now I want one even more. The colour was what was putting me off. Specs are spot on for me....

Indeed! If I had known what was underneath & if the bubble wrap fiasco wasn't a thing, I'd certainly have worn it in! Apart from the cost of the paint, the actual guitar (with all the components minus new pup covers & witch hat knobs) was a little over $700! I should've bought some lotto tickets that day or something
Good luck with your build! If you need some guidance on the oxblood route, I can share what I've learned. cheers!
