Every push-pull pot is 24 splines... Enlarging the hole in the knob?

Post by Franz the Stampede » Thu Oct 24, 2024 8:04 am

I got my coil-tapped overwound Q Pickup for my MIJ JM this week, and I'm looking for a push-pull knob for the coil tapping.

I'm UK based.

I've ordered a CTS one, but it's 24 spline, the head of the shaft is too large for my tone knob.
A DiMarzio pot looked 18 spline in the photo on Amazon, but it arrived today and it's another 24 spline :fp: :fp: :fp:

I have another on order from Armstrong Music, hopefully arriving tomorrow and declaredly 18 spline.

But I wonder if enlarging the hole in the knob is ever an option? With a drill maybe?

I've seen the actual tolerances are really up to 20% on these components, so testing all three and choosing the one closer to 500k (or even a tad past it!) would be ideal...

What knobs do you have?

I have Mustang-style knobs that don't have a spline on the inside so you can use them on either 18- or 24-spline pots with the first press onto the pot notching them.

It's a MIJ from 2010, so the normal Strat like knobs I guess.
