I’m wondering just how important it is to have the input signal to your amp close to the same for each guitar that you plug into it. I’m talking about passive pickups for this discussion. My modeling pedal that I run straight into the PA, has an input control for each guitar that I use so that the signal strength of each guitar is the same going into the pedal. My amplifier just has 2 inputs. One for passive and one for active pickups. I was wondering just how this affects my tone if at all. I know the simple stuff like the stronger the input signal the harder you are driving the amp so it would make sense that the amp would break up quicker but is this difference one of the things that makes playing through an amp so desirable? I of course have tried different settings on my pedal but I haven’t come to a satisfactory conclusion. Any thoughts on this?

I think that I’m trying to achieve a more balanced volume between different guitars. With my weaker signal single coils I have to boost the input signal to get the same volume and overdrive as my humbucker pickups. It’s really only a problem when I’m playing and have to switch guitars because I have to remember to change the input settings too. It’s more annoying than a real problem I guess.

It’s just part of life. There are a few options: raise/lower pickups to try and affect the sound, use one guitar, or mark the volume changes on amp or pedal during practice.

Hello! Same issue here, and I found this box:



It has gain pots for the three inputs, so you can preset each input. Then you could either just switch jacks, or have separate cables for each input. It works very well, but once I've dialed in the levels, I have trouble immobilizing the gain pots. Some unseen force always tweaks them. I'm going to tape them down or something.

I use a boost/EQ pedal at the start of my signal chain that I set to taste for each guitar.
