You can get grants- just via the builders. And none of the builders want the work as it’s not lucrative, or are not capable.
We needed a new boiler. Getting anyone to even quote for a heat pump was a nightmare & found out we had to pay £3k for a mid-sized table unit that would need to be in the front garden. Oh, and couldn’t heat the house past 18 Celsius or something. I think we were like 2 years too early for that tech.

I have nothing to offer anybody, except my own confusion?

Yep, the fitters don't want anything to do with that sort of thing - too much extra paperwork. I was in the plumbing supply industry when heat pumps started to be a thing, and the initial solar heating boom, and the hoops you had to jump through from every perspective were an absolute nightmare and no one actually seemed to know the exact way to do things as the legislation and process was constantly changing and evolving. I'd be more inclined just to fucking pay someone outright to do it and save the hassle these days.sal paradise wrote: ↑Sun Mar 05, 2023 9:40 pmYou can get grants- just via the builders. What is your roof made of? Here in NZ they're mostly steel so any heat that does build up gets quite hot without insulation and stays there a lonnnng time!
You might be fine with terracotta tiles. Also, you have heatwaves there now, so ignore the "ours is a pretty consistent temperature" stuff. Not any more, it isn't!
Good luck.

Re: Storing guitars in the attic
Roofs here are almost exclusively terracotta, concrete or slate tile, lined with felt and then wooden beams. If it's -8°C outside it's probably -3°C up there, in the summer it'll be 30°C-40°C. We've definitely had more heatwaves in the last few years (mid to upper 30°C's) than before. It used to be that Summer here would top-out around 30°C but we almost always have a couple of weeks in the early summer that go a bit wild.DaddyDom wrote: ↑Mon Mar 06, 2023 4:08 pmWhat is your roof made of? I'm trying to find an alternative location in the house.

You should not store anything you value in an unconditioned space, temperature variants will cause damage at some point, guaranteed.

A lot of posts from people in the US where temperatures are more extreme, we don't really have that here in the UK, I think you'll be fine.

I suppose that depends on whether you think last summer was an isolated event or not…
I bought a guitar a few years ago that had been left in a loft tuned to pitch for *years*, and the neck had pulled forward but the half inch thick metal reinforcing bar had remained where it was and sort of burrowed out of the neck. Still trying to figure out that repair

Re: Storing guitars in the attic
I was referring to the temperature changes and what that does to wood and metal.
A plus 35 degree celsius variance , even incrementally, will cause the wood to move
and the metal to oxidize over time. It’s not a great long term solution for musical instruments.
Just a thought.
