Staytrem with compound radius?
hey all,
i'd like to try a 9.5 to 12" compound radius. would the 9.5 staytrem cause issues higher up on the neck?
thanks

Technically, yes. The inner strings will be higher off the fretboard the closer you get to the bridge. Whether or not you notice it or if it’s a problem is purely up to you and your tastes.

Well, the Staytrem isn't the issue with your idea.
Back in those days, everyone knew that if you were talking about Destiny's Child, you were talking about Beyonce, LaTavia, LeToya, and Larry.

Re: Staytrem with compound radius?
With a compound radius you usually want the bridge to be an even flatter radius than the flattest part of the neck. So for a 9.5-12 you would probably want a bridge with either a 14 or 16 radius. This allows for a more gradual change from the rounder nut radius to the flatter bridge, allowing the string to conform to the radius as well.

Thanks!
Ah, that's what I was thinking, thanks.CorporateDisguise wrote: ↑Mon Aug 02, 2021 2:58 amWith a compound radius you usually want the bridge to be an even flatter radius than the flattest part of the neck. So Staytrems are out. We need more custom 3D printed metal parts in the world!

Re: Staytrem with compound radius?
For what it's worth, I've got two Staytrems and an AmPro bridge. On all but one guitar, it feels like there's a compromise - I chalk this up to either imperfections with the board/radius, or perhaps that far east necks often are actually made with 10" radii rather than the advertised 9.5". At any rate, I recently swapped out the AmPro bridge for a vintage reissue JM bridge and it really fixed all the problems I was having.
In other words, unless you have a completely perfect 9.5" radius, the fixed radius bridges aren't ideal in my opinion. Being able to set the radius based on your actual board+frets is a huge plus for the vintage bridge. I also don't have any issues with strings popping out of the grooves. I'd recommend giving it a try in this scenario.

I believe that if you contact John he'll do a custom radius, probably for an upcharge but that'd be totally fair. At least so I've heard.j mascis wrote: ↑Mon Aug 02, 2021 8:12 amThanks!

Re: Staytrem with compound radius?
I have a 18,25" Staytrem bridge which is what they build for 10-16" compound radius. It was stock and same price as their other offerings. Just ask them if they also offer something that suits your needs, which as stated above, should be around 14".
