Staytrem thimbles for MIM 60's Lacquer Jazzmaster ?

Post by JupiterGTR » Mon May 24, 2021 4:22 am

Hello everyone

I've recently purchased a 60's Lacquer Jazzmaster and have replaced the original bridge saddles with some special saddles my father had made for me a few years ago, for my first Jag. Because of strings spacing issues on the JM, he recently modified the saddles again. Unfortunately they now seem to be too loose horizontally (which we tried to fix by inserting a thin rod in the bridge next to the high E saddle, to push them all close) and I'm facing buzz issues again. I'm starting to feel a bit frustrated of not getting the best out of this beautiful guitar and I want to buy a Staytrem to fix all of this.

All this being said I think I remember reading online that the 60's Lacquer had "weird" thimbles, different from the AVRI ones, and that Staytrem, like Mastery, made special thimbles to replace the original ones on some of those weird MIM models. But when I go on the Staytrem website, I can't find those thimbles. Did I hallucinate reading about them ? Did they stop making them ? Is it possible to put the Staytrem on my guitar without replacing the thimbles ?

The guitar right now, with the saddles my father made (you can see he also replaced the original three big trem plate screws with flat ones, to avoid string contact issues) :

Most of the MIM offsets have thimbles with a slightly smaller inner diameter, it isn't just the 60s lacquer ones. Fortunately on those the Staytrem bridge is a straight drop in. I just put one on my MIM 60th anniversary JM and my Vintera 60s Jaguar. You needn't worry about different thimbles for a Staytrem for those models. Mastery would be a different story though and would require a thimble swap.

They're great bridges! I think you'll find it a vast improvement over the stock one.

i DID swap the thimbles out on my 60s lacquer because of heavy vibrato use, i wanted to let the bridge rock back and forth as much as the older designs as possible, but it certainly is not necessary.

Staytrem did sell conversion thimbles for awhile, but they were for guitars with AOM/TOM bridges. I wish someone would start doing these again as they’re a much easier solution than dowel and drill for installing a bridge made for offsets.
