Hi im new,

I've just recently bought some seymour duncan pickups for my CIJ jazzmaster and I was wondering if they will fit my cij pickup covers, I ordered some american covers just incase but they havent arrived and im getting impatient.  I've had a little search around here and seen conflicting stuff, to me it seems strange if they didnt fit as people with cij jazzmasters are more likely to need new pickups then the american ones, then I have also read that the american pickup covers dont fit cij jazzmasters either, I thought it was a pretty standard mod but it seems to be getting complicated, any help would be appreciated

Of course they'll fit. You'll just have to file the magnet holes very little for them to be exactly aligned with the holes.

thanks, does anyone know the actual reasoning behind CIJs having thinner pickups, did they make the assumption that people only like the way jazzmasters look but would prefer more conventional pickups or is it simply cheaper.  I've always wondered.

question 2: whilst im taking it apart to change the pickups is there anything I can do to reduce hum, its pretty noisey when only one pick up is on.  Thanks

I'll never understand the logic behind the electronics in the CIJ Fenders.  It could be cheaper, I guess.

Later CIJ guitars don't really have much in the way of shielding.  They paint the cavities with a "shielding paint", but that's it.  You can use foil or something similar.

i think it could be that the people who were in charge of designing the japanese jazzmaster were trying to find ways to make it more popular, and thought that one way of doing that was to make it sound more like a strat. you have to remember that this was just a few of years after fender USA decided to drop the jazzmaster cause it wasn't selling.
if you forget for a second what jazzmasters are supposed to sound like, the MIJ/CIJ JM pickups actually sound really good. they definitely have more of a traditional fender twang, and for someone who is used to playing strats i imagine a japanese jazzmaster would fit in more easily into their arsenal than a US jazzmaster.

if there are financial reasons i really don't understand how and why. i mean, they have to manufacture unique jazzmaster bobbins anyway, so i can't see how making them flatter and wider would be more expensive...
