"Raising" too deep nut slots (Rickenbacker)

Post by Pacafeliz » Tue Jul 09, 2024 10:48 am

...since there seem to be no source for Rickenbacker nut replacements on our side of the pond, i think I have to find another solution for my 480. The slots are way too deep and i get massive buzz or dead notes on the open strings.

Is there any easy way to "fill" the slots again, to raise or even re-cut them? Would something like super glue work?

Any good tips would be appreciated!
Thnx
Cheers,

Pat.

Maybe take the nut out with heat and shim it a tad?

Tap it off, shim underneath to raise it a millimeter or two, reglue. Or try these guys

(Not sure if this is the one you need but they probably have what you want)

They're not the cheapest but they have good service and sorted me out with the bits I needed.
Silly Rabbit, don't you know scooped mids are for kids?

I used this method on a Jazzmaster nut. It worked great and was very easy.

Filling nut slots with super glue (or even better epoxy resin) then re-filing slots definitely works - I’ve done it a number of times.

It does require some careful masking to make sure you don’t get glue everywhere, and after the glue hardens you will need to sand the top level before cutting the new slots.

That said, if you have multiple slots too deep (rather than just one or two), the shim method is probably more practical.

Cut a new one from a blank? PITA yes, but think of all the complements you'll get showing off your new nut! :w00t:

Superglue and baking soda to fill, then recut to correct depth/shape.

I didn't know Rics had special nuts. My tech just replaced the one on my 330 with a bone nut, no big deal.
