Two Taps, One Humbucker (Mustang Switch wiring for two taps)

Post by glarezbarez » Wed Jan 26, 2022 9:04 am

Hey y'all. I have a question about wiring options for my recently purchased Curtis Novak Mustachio Humbuckers that do 3 modes: Full humbucker, d'armond, and guyatone. You can see them in this here video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dMTwxQ0O6ds

It looks like it's wired up for ONE mustang switch at 5:30. I'm wondering what that switch wiring looks like. Considering that and all options listed below.

Mine came with bare shield and three wires: Green and red (start and finish for both coils/humbucker), and a white that's the coil tap.
Green to ground, Red to hot for full humbucker.
Send white to ground for one tap, or white to hot instead of red for the other tap.

I came up with this wiring for two mustang switches to control each pickup individually before sending it to 3 way toggle. Check me if I'm wrong:

For options, I'd like to know how it looks one one slide switch(this is what stumps me). I think you can also do the same thing with two push/push 3pdt pots...check this one with all 3 modes and a kill option.

Thanks for your help...Just curious and want to make a decision on this. Things like routing and extra holes, different pickguards, head spins.

If I’m remembering how i wired up my frankensmith (used to be a 1st Santana se) you need a single pole (double is fine, just the second pole is unused) on/off/on switch (which mustang 3way slide switches are) depending on the color coding, your series link (which on Seymour Duncan pickups is white and red, can’t remember which is the start and which is the end in respect to the north and south coils) is soldered to the middle tab so when in the off position your in series humbucker. Then your hot wire goes to on tab, and your ground and cover ground go to the other end, make sure to ground that tab to the rest of your electronics. That will give you South split/series/north split sounds on each pickup (assuming your running 2 switches, I guess you could use a single 2 pole switch)

Curious where you found a link to those pickups? I loved the sound and versatility of the 2 different foil types, but couldn’t find anything for them on his website, closest thing was the humbucker sized gold foils, so I was starting to think they were the same pickup just a different style cover.

Thanks for the reply. I had to email him via the site.

These things don't have the series link exposed. I think I may have figured it out but may be a bunch of trial and error with two mustang switches(it might be neat to mix the pickup types).
