No, I don't think that your post was suggesting anyone buy them.

I don't know if these are really Kauer copies, I don't know what they are, although some of the body shapes and pickup configurations do look a lot like things I've seen Doug make.

Beats me. For as popular as the electric guitar is, there's shockingly little room for fresh thought and originality, on the other hand, a lot of ground was covered in the golden age already.

But there are other threads about that.
Back in those days, everyone knew that if you were talking about Destiny's Child, you were talking about Beyonce, LaTavia, LeToya, and Larry.

I guess copy is the wrong word but I didn't know what else to call them. It is obvious he is copying design aspects of a Kauer model.

I think it looks enough like a Kauer that I'd be a bit miffed if I was Doug Kauer. 3 on a side headstock and the pickguard are definitely influenced by the Arcurus. It looks like he's sold some too.

This guy is Dan Wolf Guitars - and it looks like he's here in Denver. I seem to recall seeing some of his parts guitars being offered up here on craigslist, although not any more.

I guess I don't see what the issue is unless the copy is actually marketing itself as a "Kauer". Maybe I'm just ignorant on this, but I was under the impression that basic design shapes of guitars were pretty open to interpretation. Strats and Teles are a perfect example of this. Unless of course it looks like a Rickenbacker. John Hall is merciless in protecting the brand, and I can understand that. If Doug Kauer "copies" Gibson Firebirds I would think he wouldn't mind if others "copy" his style. Plus, I didn't see an exact resemblance. I suppose the ultimate arbiter in this would be Doug himself. If he feels he's being slighted he can go the Ric route and force them to stop. I've looked at his work, and the "copies" and I'd say his stuff is pretty extraordinary. I don't think he has to worry much.

Well, heck. I guess i don't know what The Kauer Arcturus looks like after all. I just googled it, and it's got a 6 on a side headstock - I thought it had a 3+3 headstock.

And, there are only so many ways you can cut a pickguard for a Jazzmaster -

So I guess the OP guitars are just really crappy looking Jazzmasters.

Never mind! :derp:

I did notice that the pictures of the guitar on the couch in the original post are all the same picture, and same guitar, with photo shopped color changes. The knob position is the same in every one, and so are the loose strings at the peghead.

Right, and look at how many guitar makers use the 3+3 headstock. It's not like Kauer is the only one.

Wait. I thought we had a good old mob mentality thing here. Is that not what we are doing?

I think the thread title is unintentionally inflammatory. These are hardly copies in the same way that Kauer are hardly copies of something else.

The number and location of these switches though :derp:

I don't think Doug will be miffed at all when he sees this, he'll probably just laugh about it. Whether or not it's a copy, or whether or not the style is even coming from the same place is arguable. But a wise man once told me, "don't worry when people copy you, worry when they stop."

It's half way between a Jazzmaster and a Toronado. I think apart from the bad relic jobs, they're just badly photographed. That's a big deal when you're selling online. I wouldn't buy something that looked bad in the photo.

I wouldn't say they were Kauer copies, but taking a similar slightly alter Fender guitar approach.

One builder copying another copying another. New guitar design has existed for a long time. You can't get too choked. Look at the pedal clone business

Yeah this looks nothing like any Kauer models. I'm confused. Haha.
